Michelle Falla, assistant professor in the College of Nursing at Ohio State University and lead author of the research, said in a study published in ‘The Journal of Pain’, ‘To find out which parts of the brain respond to pain, 18 to 40. Most studies have been done on people aged 15 to 18 years.

(We wanted to) understand what the impact is between the ages of 30 and 90 because that’s when people start experiencing intense pain.’ For the study, researchers recruited 27 women and 32 men aged 30-86 and exposed them to increasing levels of heat.

They were asked to inform about the effects of heat. Researchers found gender-specific changes due to aging in certain areas of the brain. They found that at moderate levels of pain, men’s pain perception decreased with age while women’s pain perception increased with age.
