Question: Worked with directors like Shyam Benegal, Prakash Jha, Anurag Kashyap. How were you able to reconcile their world and thinking?

Answer : It was quite easy to harmonize with all the directors you named because we are of the same mind. The demands of the story are seen in the same way. The method may also be different, but the approach is the same. Every director has his own temperament.

Question: How meaningful are the new films being made for the coming generation in comparison to the old films?

Answer : In my view, we should do only what we want to do. In main stream cinema, the focus is less on stories and more on stardom. The entire film depends on the star cast and is woven around them. But because I was brought up in theater, all this bores me. We theater people have a habit of becoming a part of the story and immersing ourselves in it. Still, to get strength for my kind of films, I also do some main stream films. The discipline of theater is very strict and we have become used to it.

Question: There has been a lot of change in the era of OTT cinema since 98. How do you see it?

Answer : At Satya’s time there was no such thing as a script. Earlier the presence of women on the sets was also less. But, today there is up to 50 percent presence of women on every set. During the shooting of Gulmohar, this number was seen up to 70 percent. The change has been huge. Now no one works without a script. Secondly, nowadays most scripts are written in Roman Hindi. This happens because the new directors have English background. But, even today we demand a script in Devanagari, so that we can understand its meaning better.

Question: The character of Bhikhu Mhatre went from city to village, yet Amavasya Night remained for a very long time in your career. What was the reason?

Answer : Our industry is determined by box office. The industry asks how much your film earned. It doesn’t look at how much hard work the actor or director put into it.

Q: Any character whom you consider most challenging, or closest to you?

Answer : It will be very difficult to answer this. Every character has its own challenges. The character which gives recognition is a better character. People recognize him from Satya to Shool and now Family Man. All the characters were better.

Question: It is written in your horoscope whether you will become a leader or an actor. What are your thoughts about entering politics in future?

Answer: It was good that Pandit ji had told Babu ji in his childhood itself. I will never become a leader. Yes, I am very interested in understanding politics. This habit has been inculcated from home since childhood. Perhaps because of my political understanding, my films related to politics were also quite hits.

Question: Why should people watch ‘Zoram’?

Answer: People complain that good films are not released. But, if a good film comes, people do not go to watch it. That’s why I would say that once you buy a ticket, go to the hall and watch this film and if you like it, then send people around you to watch it too. The plot of this film, after entering it, will not let you get out of it till the end of the film and even after that.

Question: What is the secret of fitness despite a busy routine?

Answer : I am definitely busy, but I don’t take any stress. This is the biggest secret of fitness. Be in any film, as long as you maintain discipline, your health will be fine. No one compromises with routine.

Question: What are your plans for the future?

Answer : Shooting a series killer for Netflix. This series with Konkana Sen Sharma will come by January. Along with this, work is going on on Silence 2 for G5. A main stream film Bhaiyya Ji will also be released by 24th May, in which I am also the producer. I am starting the shooting of Family Man 3 from March.
