Actor Abhishek Bachchan’s film Ghoomar has hit the theaters last Friday. In this sports based film, Abhishek is seen as a strict mentor. He tells that he got his hair white for the character. Although the hair of all his friends of his age have turned gray a little, but his hair is still very dark, not a single hair has turned white. Your character in the trailer of the film is quite khadus, how difficult was it to get into this character?
Yes, my character is very rude and very insensitive. I also told Balki, the director of the film, that he should not talk to a woman like this. He said no, you do because he needs normal behaviour. By not behaving normally, you are feeling sorry for him. You are talking like this means it is clear that you are that girl who does not have one hand. It doesn’t matter to you. If you want to compete with the rest of the world, you have to work harder than other people. Don’t use your weakness as a crutch, rather use it as a strength. This strength also comes from normal behavior. Will come in that character too, so it is necessary for my character to be like this.
Your association with R.Balki goes back a long way, how would you describe this association?
I love working with him. I have been associated with him for the last twenty years. We did the first film ‘Paa’ with him but I have worked with him in many commercials as well. I like his sensitivity and his unique perspective on certain situations in life. He is a wonderful person.
Is there a need to read scripts because of bonding for so many years?
Ours is a bit different, rather sir just tells me his idea and when you say you like it, he goes ahead and writes it and then once the script is complete, I read it too.
Is this film inspired from the life of a sportsperson?
Director Balki was inspired by a Hungarian pistol shooter who won gold medals in the Olympics, but developed a problem with his right hand, after which he trained to shoot with his left hand and then won two more gold medals in the Olympics. This incident inspired the idea for the film. It is not based on that.
Your career has been full of ups and downs, does the constant failure lead to self-doubt, have your parents been very successful as actors?
Obviously I doubt myself at times. Yes, my parents are successful, but that doesn’t stop you from being good yourself. More than that it is about you and your expectations. The biggest critic of your talent is you. You know where you have gone wrong. At least when I watch my films, I know whether it will work or not.
Do you believe in being negative or constructive as a critic?
You have to be creative. I do not believe in negativity of any kind. You have to decide what will happen next. You don’t complain, always tell the solution.
Who is your biggest critic?
I am my biggest critic and watch my films everyday. I have a stack of notebooks where I have jotted down notes on where I have gone wrong.
You are seen as a strict mentor in the film, who has been your mentor in your bad days?
My parents have always been my mentors. I guess you could say that mother was always there. Papa mostly used to stay in shooting. Mother was strict, but father never raised his hand on us, even today he just has to look at us and we understand our mistake. By the way, both of them have been very supportive and loving parents.
Who according to you is the winner?
It depends, if you are a sportsman then you know who is the winner, whether you win or lose the game, but in life we have to go beyond that. We have to pass through a different area. The definition of success has to be changed. The present generation has become more materialistic. If I talk about myself, I feel that if I can sleep peacefully at night with my head on the pillow, then this is success. Perhaps we should focus more on achieving something important rather than on it. We work so hard and think that we have to buy a bungalow and a car. This is a very tricky thing, because in the end after death we have to go here after losing everything. I remember during Kovid, we had just returned from the hospital after suffering from Kovid. We were all tired of sitting at home and complaining. My wife came over and said, “Listen, we have a lot to be thankful for, we have a healthy family. What is more important than this. I found this right. Your near and dear ones are happy, healthy and together. I don’t see any bigger definition of success than this.
You said this generation is materialistic, you have a niece and nephew who are growing up now and your daughter Aaradhya is also grown up, so what advice would you like to give them?
I teach them to be good human beings. This is what my parents taught me. Navya and Agastya are adults today and they are an example for Aaradhya as well. Aishwarya and I are teaching him to be a good person. This is what we were taught in childhood.
In personal life, do you motivate Aaradhya in any particular exam as a mentor?
All this is done by his mother. I think you should be loving and encouraging. This is the best thing that every parent must do. Giving them emotional support and letting them know that they will be loved no matter what happens is essential. Anyway life will teach them.
Have you seen Rocky and Rani and what do you think about your mother Jaya Bachchan’s performance?
It’s a different feeling and equation with my mother, I don’t see her as an actor. I can see father and Aishwarya as actors but cannot see mother. That’s just a feeling. I can never judge her. I saw the film with him. It’s hard to associate her as anything other than her mother. So it is very emotional for me.

Going to start shooting for a film with Shoojit Sircar.
