Mumbai – National Award-winning filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar, known for directing sensitive and powerful films like “Parineeta” and “Mardaani”, passed away on Friday morning after prolonged illness. Family sources gave this information. Sarkar was 67 and his last rites will be performed today at 4 pm at the Santacruz crematorium.
Sarkar was admitted to a hospital last night due to kidney and related ailments, and breathed his last in the early hours of the morning. As the news spread, Bollywood celebrities including Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee, Ashok Pandit, Neetu Chandra-Srivastava, Hansal Mehta and Neil Nitin Mukesh expressed condolences and paid tribute to the late director.
Sarkar began his career in the entertainment industry with commercials and music videos in the early 1990s before making his directorial debut with Parineeta (2005) starring Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan. Throughout his career, he directed other notable films like ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’ (2007), ‘Lafangey Parindey’ (2010), ‘Mardaani’ (2014), and ‘Helicopter Eela’ (2018). Sarkar also co-edited the blockbuster Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Munna Bhai MBBS (2003).
In recent years, Sarkar expanded his portfolio by directing web series like ‘Cold Lassi Aur Chicken Masala,’ ‘Arranged Marriage,’ ‘Forbidden Love,’ and ‘Duranga,’ starting in 2019. His death marks the end of a distinguished career. His contribution to the Indian film industry, and to Bollywood, will be remembered for years to come.
