Melbourne. Captain Alexandra Popp scored twice as Germany began their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign with a 6-0 win over newcomers Morocco at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Monday.
Germany, the two-time champions, had previously lost only one of their last 24 group-stage matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Morocco, participating in the competition for the first time, never seemed to challenge him.
Morocco fell behind in the 11th minute when captain Pope put Germany ahead 1–0 with a header. Germany took a 2–0 lead with another header just before half time.
Clara Buhl scored in the first minute of the second half. Germany then tightened its grip, rubbing salt on Morocco’s wounds. Morocco scored two own goals and finally Schuler scored in injury time to give the team a big win.
Germany now hold a strong lead at the top of Group H ahead of Tuesday’s match between the other two teams in the group, Colombia and Korea Republic.
