Launched its first trial of ‘Digital Travel Credentials’ or DTC
The grand European nation has launched its first trial of ‘Digital Travel Credentials’ or DTCs. Basically a passport on your phone, this pilot scheme is taking place in Helsinki in collaboration with Finnair, airport operator Finavia and the Finnish police.
Flights are available to London, Edinburgh and Manchester
As of now, the scheme is only available to Finns, and flights to London, Edinburgh and Manchester are available at the end of August. However, it is not just Finland that is testing this method. The European Commission had contacted many European countries for this last year. Croatia volunteered for this and a similar pilot will take place in Zagreb later in 2023.
How does this work?
Finns wishing to volunteer must register with the Finnish Police and download an app. Then, they need to book an appointment at the police station in Vantaa, which is close to Helsinki Airport. Volunteers will have to take a hard copy of their passport and sign a consent form.
A photo of them will be taken and after these things, the DTC can be used either on UK flights from Helsinki Airport, or on direct Finnair flights to Helsinki Airport.
Those who volunteer must send their data to the Finnish Border Guard 36 to four hours before the flight via the app. A separate line has been set up for volunteers at passport control in Helsinki.
The Finnish Border Guard claims that these digital passports will allow faster border crossing without compromising security.
