Proctor is considered a great Test player. Six of their seven Test matches were won against Australia. Before his international career ended he had taken 41 wickets at an average of just 15.02. His best performance of 6 for 73 came in the second innings of his final appearance at Port Elizabeth, leading to a 323-run victory.
Proctor was also known for his strength with the bat. He played a key role in the 4–0 defeat of Australia in 1969/1970 and his contribution to South Africa was acknowledged by Wisden. He was named one of the best cricketers of the year in 1970. Procter was the coach of South Africa at the time of their re-entry into international cricket.
He led the Proteas to the semi-finals of the 1992 Cricket World Cup. He later served as an ICC match referee between 2002 and 2008, where controversies followed him. Procter had banned India’s Harbhajan Singh for three Test matches in 2008 for allegedly making racist remarks towards Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds.
