RK Studio: Kapoor family kept the old tradition of Ganeshotsav alive for 70 years

In the famous Ganeshotsav of Bollywood, the most important name has been that of ‘RK i.e. Raj Kapoor’s Ganapati. The Kapoor family of Bollywood kept this family tradition alive for 70 years, but with the sale of RK Studio in the year 2018, this family showed its last participation in Ganeshotsav and said goodbye to Bappa forever from RK Studio. Film expert Dilip Thakur, who has been active in film journalism for more than six decades, says that with the construction of RK Studio in Chembur, the tradition of celebrating Holi as well as Ganesh Utsav started there. Raj Kapoor had made a place on the right hand side of his studio to install the idol of Ganapati, so that the idol could be installed there every year and the shooting work could continue in the studio without any hindrance. The shooting of the film continued, hence many special celebrities kept becoming a part of RK’s Ganpati. During this time, the doors of the studio were also opened for the common people, so that they too could go to the studio and have darshan of Bappa. People used to come from far and wide of Mumbai to see RK’s Ganpati. RK’s Ganpati immersion was also always special, which included dancing with drums.

Raj Kamal Studio: The glamor associated with Ganpati festival is no longer visible.

Raj Kamal Kala Mandir has also been named in the famous Ganeshotsav of the industry. Like Raj Kapoor, here too studio head V Shantaram himself used to bring Ganpati. Film expert Dilip tells that a big Ganpati idol was made in the studio for the song Chal Ja Re Hat Natkhat… from the film ‘Navrang’ released in 1959. When the shooting of the film ended, V Shantaram decided that he would not remove the idol, but worship it during Ganeshotsav. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Ganeshotsav started, which continues even today after 64 years. However, the glamor associated with Ganpati festival is no longer visible as it used to be in those days. The Ganpati idol of Raj Kamal was very big. That was one of his important characteristics. Raj Kamal Studio was one of the favorite studios of Manoj Kumar and Yash Chopra in those days, where they loved to shoot. Therefore, along with these directors, many actors were also an important part of the Ganpati celebrations there. Dilip Thakur tells that even the Ganpati immersion of Raj Kamal Studio was no less than a grand event. During immersion on the 11th day, crowds of people used to walk with this idol. This is the reason why V Shantaram had placed the banner of his film ‘Geet Gaya Patharon Ne’ next to the Ganpati idol during the immersion of Ganpati, so that his film could also be promoted. This style of his promotion made a lot of headlines at that time.

Ganpati puja was also held in these studios

Apart from the famous studios of that era, RK and Raj Kamal, the festival of Ganpati was also celebrated with full enthusiasm for 11 days in Filmalaya and Natraj Studios, but this festival was celebrated not by the owners of these studios but by the people working there. Because of this, there was no special glamor in the Ganpati celebrations of these studios. But as long as these studios remained active, they always celebrated Ganeshotsav in their own style. There was a huge crowd of common people in these studios also.

Ganpati puja of these stars remains in the headlines every year

In the present era, there is no tradition of studios nor is there a trend of celebrating Ganeshotsav with pomp and show by taking everyone together like in the past. Now the entire industry seems to be celebrating Ganeshotsav not together, but with their families and some special friends, in which the Ganpati of some stars’ houses remains in the headlines every year.

• Salman Khan’s sister Arpita Khan’s Ganpati is one of the popular Ganpati in the industry, because Salman Khan’s entire family and his close friends also participate in this festival every year.

• Bappa’s devotee Shilpa Shetty Kundra celebrates Ganesh Utsav every year with her entire family, in which her look attracts everyone’s attention every year.

• Producer Ekta Kapoor welcomes Ganpati with her father Jitendra and brother Tusshar Kapoor. Almost all the stars of the small screen become a part of this Ganpati festival. Because of this, this Ganpati festival remains in discussion every year.

• Ganpati chants have also been heard in the homes of Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Nana Patekar, Vivek Oberoi and Neil Nitin Mukesh. This time 30 years of Ganpati Puja is going to be completed in Neil Nitin Mukesh’s house.

Hindi cinema’s jumping jack Jeetendra has spent 22 years of his life in Shyam Sadan Chawl located in Girgaum. He always describes the memories of those days as very special. Especially, the celebration of Ganpati festival there has been very close to his heart. This is the reason that despite bringing Ganpati to his house, Jitendra has always celebrated the first day of Ganesh Utsav in the name of Shyam Sadan Chawl. If he is in Mumbai during Ganeshotsav, then on the first day he will go to Shyam Sadan Chawl to have darshan of Ganpati. In this regard, Dilip Thakur tells that in every Ganesh Utsav, Jitendra’s routine has been that he used to go to Shyam Sadan Chawl on the first day and have darshan of Ganapati. He had followed this rule till two years ago, because Shyam Sadan Chawl was demolished two years ago and now a big building has been built there. We can say that they have carried on this tradition well for more than 50 years.
