New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team opener Gautam Gambhir has called Ravi Shastri’s statement that he has advocated three left-handed batsmen in the team as useless. Gambhir said that it is not necessary whether the batsman is left-handed or right-handed. Player performance and form should be taken into account, not how many left-handed batsmen are there in the squad.

Gambhir said, ‘A good player, whether he is right-handed or left-handed, will play well in every situation. So, if Iyer plays well or Rahul scores runs, pick them. It is not necessary to choose left-handed batsmen if they are not in form.

He said, ‘I don’t think there was any need to start this left-handed debate. If you want a left-handed batsman, you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as well. You always look at the quality and form of the player, not how many players are left-handers.

What did Ravi Shastri say?

On the other hand, Ravi Shastri said that ‘India can have two more left-handed batsmen along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to strengthen the middle order. However, the onus is on the selectors to see who is in good form. If Tilak Verma is in good form then include him in the team. If you think (Yashasvi) Jaiswal is in good form, then include him too.

Apart from this, Shastri also showed confidence in Ishaan Kishan. He said, ‘If you have been with Ishaan Kishan for the last six to eight months and he is also doing wicketkeeping, then he must be included in the team. But also include two left-handed batsmen.

Along with Jadeja, there should be three left-handers in the top seven. Ishaan Kishan has been doing wicketkeeping for the last 15 months. So why look to someone else?

Apart from this, he also praised Tilak Verma, who made a successful debut in his international career in the West Indies. He said that he is very impressed with Tilak Verma and if they are looking for a left-handed batsman, they will look in that direction.
