Ghoda Library: There is a unique library in Uttarakhand which is winning the hearts of people. This is not some grand old building with books or some educational institution. It is on horseback. You read that right, we are talking about the unique and adorable horse library.
Uttarakhand has recently seen some very harsh days in this monsoon season. Heavy rains and landslides have almost thrown the state into disarray. In Uttarakhand, everything including educational institutions like schools and colleges were closed.
Unique and brilliant idea is helping children
In remote parts of Uttarakhand, where life is tough anyway, the closure of schools means young readers aren’t getting the education they need, especially the reading habit. To avoid this, Nainital resident Shubham Badhani thought out of the box and came up with this unique and brilliant idea of a horse library.
What is horse library
As the name suggests, there is a horse that carries a bunch of books on its back and travels from village to village, stopping for every person who wants to read a book or two. It is safe to say that the idea got a great response and many people, youth and adults, started using the unique portable library.
This library became famous among children
Today, books are being delivered to many remote mountain villages through “Ghoda Library”, so that the intellectual development of the mountain children does not stop. However, there were many problems in this campaign. Shubham told that the biggest problem/challenge is the disaster of the mountain. The second challenge is not easy to explain the importance of library to the community and the third challenge is lack of books.
Due to this, children in the villages have now got full access to books and other study materials. You can find Ghoda library in many remote villages of Nainital district. Some of the villages are Baghani, Jalna, Mahaldhura, Alekh, Gautiya, Dhinwakharak and Bansi. Now books are available to the children even when the school is closed.
This initiative was successful because of the voluntary participation of the parents. An arrangement was made where parents volunteered their horses for one day every week. Let’s be honest, the horse was a really nice touch. It will grab the attention of kids as well as adults who need it.
Ghoda library was also famous since 19th century
In the 19th century itself (in 1839) it originated in the states of Texas and New York. Famous publishers Harper Brothers, American School Libraries and Smithonian Museum kept providing books in wooden boxes to remote cities by motorcar. In Britain, George Moore had built several mobile libraries for the promotion of outstanding literature in the villages. This process of development kept on increasing gradually. This illustration is from 1935 to 1943, when the Pack Horse Library Project flourished. Under the scheme of Book Mobile, the supply of books was maintained even in the areas damaged by the bombings during the Second World War. Books were sent on mules and jeeps. During that crisis, a thought deepened that “people without books” means “houses without windows”. So the book tour was planned. Contribution of mobile library became very strong. The American video of the last century (1957) shows that books were sent in wagons. Under the “Library in Action” scheme (1960), school books were sent to black settlements.
