Director R Balki claimed at the trailer launch that during the writing process of the film, he came to know about the Hungarian shooter, Károly Takács, who won two Olympic gold medals in 1948 and 1952 in the 25m pistol shooting event. He won both these medals with his left hand.

“You have to earn the right to bowl left-handed”, says a drunken cricket coach to a right-handed batsman who has to become a left-arm bowler, not by choice but because he has no other option. Anina (played by Saiyami Kher) not only has to learn to live but also fight with her grief to fulfill her dream of playing for India, which was shattered in a heart-wrenching way.

Director R Balki claimed at the trailer launch that during the writing process of the film, he came to know about the Hungarian shooter, Károly Takács, who won two Olympic gold medals in 1948 and 1952 in the 25m pistol shooting event. He won both these medals with his left hand. His right hand was seriously injured. The film is not related to the Hungarian athlete in any way but his life definitely inspired ‘Ghoomar’. Balki takes that story and turns it into a story of a woman cricketer. It’s an interesting spin because apart from Shabaash Mithu and Dil Bole Hadippa, not many films have been made on women’s cricket in India. Ghoomar looks and feels like a sports biopic, which it isn’t and Balki – in the film’s few minutes – throws that notion away by getting straight to the point instead of wandering around.

story plot

Anina, whose name remains the same when read from left or right, is a promising young cricketer who gets selected in the Indian cricket team without ever playing for her state. But his dream is in danger of being snatched away by an unfortunate accident. She has lost all hope, leave alone an athlete, any human being wants to die in the condition Anina has reached. on the other hand one Dum Singh Sodhi (played by Abhishek Bachchan) who plays Kot. he asks anina How will you die by hanging a rope from a fan or by tying a bedsheet? He There is no one to sympathize with Anina.

What will sympathy do? How long will this last as Anina has her whole life ahead of her? Paddy Sir is a practical creature who believes in starting afresh, who wants Anina not to give up, not for the society or her family but for herself. Anina is born and brought up in a supportive family with her two brothers, her father and her cricket-fanatic grandmother (played by Shabana Azmi).

movie review

Ghoomar never makes the audience feel pity for Anina or her situation, which it very easily could have done. Balki treads the path very carefully and this is also reflected in how the accident is staged. There’s no slow tempo or heavy background music to support it, it just happens.

Ghoomar is similar to films like ‘Dangal’ and ‘The Way Back’ (starring Ben Affleck) where the coach’s journey is as important as the player, or the team, and Bachchan as Paddy Sir has been given a free hand. Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani’s writing sets Bachchan free, a drunkard who just speaks his mind and doesn’t hesitate to say things the other person may not like. Anina, on the other hand, has to start from scratch. From doing basic tasks with your left hand to first unlearning and then learning. Saiyami gives her all. She has flaws but she plays the role with confidence and maturity and being a cricketer herself, this was probably a special role for her.

The second half turns a tad emotional and the screenplay takes a turn for comfort but with strong characters, Balki ensures that he neither loses his grip on the screenplay nor lets the audience take their eyes off the screen. Bachchan excels in a role that could be his career defining one. Paddy Sir also gets emotional and gets an entire monologue with his name to reveal his back story, excerpts of which are also in the trailer, but he knows where to use that side of himself. Bachchan’s dialogue writing in particular is exceptional. However, a better music could have really lifted some of the high points of the film, especially in the last 30 minutes.

Decision

Overall, the film is worth watching but it is not without its flaws. Balki’s love for cricket is widely known, starting with his debut film ‘Cheeni Kum’ and with the help of sports director Dhruv P Panjuani, the game looks and feels real apart from the noise of the fake crowd.
