New Delhi: Australian selectors are looking for Usman Khawaja’s opening partner for the upcoming West Indies series. Meanwhile, former Australian cricketer Shane Watson believes that after David Warner’s retirement, Cameron Green can be the best option to replace him.
Shane Watson says Green’s previous experience at the top of the order is not needed, but Australia need to focus on his bowling as it may take him a match or two to understand his game plan.
“There’s no question in my mind that he can open,” Watson told ESPN Cricinfo. “Australia needs to bring Cameron Green into the team and the opportunity you have right now is to open for him. Certainly.” They just have to manage their bowling, just like it was done in my time.
“But he’s got the skills, the ability to score runs and certainly the understanding to be able to make the most of being an opening batsman. It may take him a game or two to really be able to work on his game.”
Along with Green, Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris are also being considered as possible replacements for Warner at the top of the order.
Even coach Andrew McDonald had recently hinted that Green is the man to replace Warner at the top. However, he also said that all options will be considered.
Since his debut in December 2020, Green has played 24 Tests, scoring 1075 runs at an average of 33.59 with one century and five half-centuries. He has also taken 30 wickets, including a five-wicket haul against South Africa at the MCG.
