WFI will challenge the suspension next week, executive committee meeting on January 16

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will challenge the suspension imposed by the Sports Ministry in court next week and has also called an executive committee meeting here on January 16 to discuss the future strategy. The government had suspended the newly elected body on December 24, three days after the federation’s elections, citing violations of the National Sports Code and the WFI constitution.
The WFI has said that it neither accepts the suspension nor recognizes the ad-hoc panel constituted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to look into the functioning of wrestling. “We need a smoothly functioning federation,” WFI president Sanjay Singh told PTI. We are taking this matter to court next week. This suspension is not acceptable to us because our elections were held democratically. We have also called a meeting of the executive committee on January 16. ,
Sanjay Singh from Varanasi explained how the ad-hoc panel was not suitable to work in difficult times. He said, “You must have seen how the team was announced for the Zagreb Open. There was no representation in five weight classes. This is what will happen without proper federation. If some wrestlers were not available in their respective categories then why were they not replaced by someone else? ,
Sanjay Singh said, “When the federation was functioning, there was never any weight category in any tournament in which India was not represented. And what was the rationale behind selecting the same team that participated in the Asian Games. Other claimants were also involved. He said, “I have been getting calls from wrestlers who felt that they were worthy of a place in the Indian team. He said that if he had been given a chance to prove himself through trials, he could have made a place in the team. That’s why you need a smoothly functioning federation. ,
Meanwhile, a WFI source revealed that the notice for the executive committee was issued on December 31. One point of the agenda issued in this is to define and interpret some provisions of the Constitution. Citing the Constitution, the circular clearly mentions that ‘the President will be the chief officer of the WFI. If he feels appropriate, he will have the right to call council and executive meetings.
The Sports Ministry had expressed objection over the absence of the General Secretary in the General Council meeting of the WFI on December 21. WFI said that it has not violated any rule and as per the Constitution, the President has the authority to take decisions and the General Secretary will be bound to implement these decisions. “We will also discuss setting up an ad-hoc panel and hosting national championships in different age groups,” a source said. ,
Interestingly, the ad-hoc panel has already announced that it will organize the Senior National Championship in Jaipur from February 3 and the Age Group Championship in Gwalior within the next six weeks. It remains to be seen which tournament the wrestlers take part in, organized by the WFI or the ad-hoc committee.
