Upset over being dropped from the Indian team for the Asian Games Deepa Karmakar on Tuesday Sports Authority of India (SAI) And made a scathing attack on the Sports Ministry. He described it as disappointing and discouraging. The gymnast, who finished a historic fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics, recently topped her event in the Asian Games trials. But he was dropped from the Indian team for not meeting the criteria to make it to the top eight in the last 12 months.

Deepa was banned for two years due to doping

Dipa Karmakar was serving a two-year ban for an anti-doping violation, so she did not meet this criteria. Two days after her coach Bisheshwar Nandi criticized SAI, Dipa took to social media to express her anger and helplessness. She wrote on the social site ‘X’ (earlier Twitter), ‘On this Independence Day, I am using my freedom of speech to discuss recent events which have proved to be very discouraging. Asian Games 2023 was one such event that I was eagerly waiting for since last two years. Now it is visible far away.

Due to this Deepa missed

The official criteria states that the performance of an athlete in individual events during the preceding 12 months should not be less than that achieved by the eighth position holder in the 2018 Asian Games. However, after heavy lobbying by IOA secretary general Kalyan Choubey, who is also the president of AIFF, the Indian men’s football team was cleared to travel despite not meeting the criteria. However, Deepa thinks that topping the trials should have been enough for her to join.

Deepa topped the trial

Deepa further wrote, ‘I am surprised that despite topping the national trials and meeting the selection criteria of the Sports Ministry, it appears that I will be denied the opportunity to participate in the Asian Games.’ What has angered him is the lack of communication from the authorities. What is worse is that the reasons behind this decision are unknown to me and have not been officially communicated. Instead, my fellow gymnasts and I are reading in the news about our exclusion from the Games and I just don’t know what to make of it. He urged the officers to be fair in their assessment.

Deepa still has hope

Despite all this, Deepa is still confident of participating in the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou. He said that the hard work and sacrifices that go into preparing for major sports are rarely appreciated and instead there is uncertainty and deafening silence from the Sports Authority of India and the Sports Ministry. All I want is that the selection criteria should be applied fairly and consistently across sports. And it is requested that the correct information should be given to us so that we are not left in uncertainty. Meanwhile, I express my gratitude to my country that I will continue my training and I hope to join the Indian team in Hangzhou next month. Jai Hind!
