Happy to hear the reply from the director of Animal film: Javed Akhtar

Javed Akhtar, referring to his earlier statement that the commercial success of films containing problematic scenes was a dangerous trend, said that when ‘Animal’ director Sandeep Reddy Vanga could not find anything objectionable in his 53 years of work, he felt… Very happy to see this.

Akhtar had expressed concern over the current state of cinema in an apparent dig at Vanga’s film during an event earlier this year, but he did not name the film. The film director did not like this and termed Akhtar’s art as “fake”.

In this film, Ranbir Kapoor played the character of a violent man who is desperate for his father’s approval. The film faced criticism for its violent and misogynistic scenes. The film became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2023 by earning Rs 900 crore at the box office.

Akhtar (79) said during an interview with digital organization ‘Mojo Story’, “I was very happy when he or his team responded.” I felt honored. In my career of 53 years, he could not find a single film, a single script, a single scene, a single dialogue or a single song for which he could say, ‘Look, you have written this and you are talking about my film. You are talking’.

He said when the ‘Animal’ director found no fault in his work, he decided to target his son Farhan Akhtar for ‘Mirzapur’. Akhtar said, “They had to go to my son’s office and they found a TV serial in which Farhan neither acted in nor directed it nor did he write it. His company has manufactured it.

Nowadays, big companies like Excel are manufacturing a lot of things. So one of them was this (Mirzapur). He mentioned it. This made me very happy. You couldn’t find anything in 53 years of my career. What a shame.”

He said that he had not condemned the filmmaker in his statement. He said, “In a democratic society, he (Vanga) has the right to make one ‘Animal’ and many films like ‘Animal’. I was worried about the audience, not the filmmaker. He has the right to make any kind of film. “People should actually have the right to make porn and it should be released ‘for adults only’.”

Akhtar said a filmmaker can portray problematic characters like Rannvijay played by Kapoor in ‘Animal’ in a dignified manner but his appreciation by crores of people is a “matter of concern”.

He also spoke on the Uniform Civil Code and said, “I have been a supporter of the Uniform Civil Code, not from yesterday but for many years, but what is happening in the name of the Uniform Civil Code is absurd.

Under the banner of Uniform Civil Code, it should not be used as an attack on Muslims or minorities. It should be fair and logical and should be from the Centre. There should be a deep discussion on this.
