High blood pressure can increase the risk of stroke in diabetic patients, research revealed – Dainik Savera Times
New Delhi : Chinese researchers have found in a study that diabetic patients with high blood pressure may be at risk of stroke. The study published in the journal Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome Clinical Research and Reviews showed that systolic blood pressure is directly linked to the risk of stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The team from Central South University in China said blood pressure increases the risk of stroke in individuals with type 2 diabetes and hypothesized that measuring blood pressure could help predict stroke risk. For the study, the team conducted research on 8,282 people for 6.36 years.
The results showed that blood pressure and pulse pressure independently showed a higher risk of stroke, meaning a strong association between BP and stroke was identified. Both diabetes and high blood pressure are major health challenges globally. Studies have shown that diabetic patients have a 2 to 4 times increased risk of ischemic stroke compared to the rest of the population.
Diabetic patients who have strokes may have to stay in hospital longer, become disabled and have a higher mortality rate. On the other hand, high blood pressure, commonly found in diabetic patients, is the biggest risk factor for stroke, the study said.
