Hindi cinema should stop calling itself Bollywood: Mani Ratnam

Renowned cinema director Mani Ratnam is going to appear in front of the audience next week with his film Ponniyan Selvan-2. Ponniyan Selvan which released on 30th September last year had collected 500 crores at the box office collecting excellent business figures. The sequel to this film is Ponniyan Selvan-2, which was shot simultaneously with the first part. The audience is eagerly waiting for this film. It remains to be seen whether Ponniyan Selvan 2 becomes as successful at the box office as the first part.
On 19 April, Mani Ratnam participated in a panel discussion where he talked about the seminal influence of South Indian films on world cinema. This panel in Chennai CII was held at the Southern Media & Entertainment Summit. During the discussion, Mani Ratnam said that if the Hindi film industry could stop referring to itself as Bollywood, then people would stop identifying Indian cinema as Bollywood.
What did Mani Ratnam say?
Referring to the fact that Indian cinema is known as Bollywood in the West, Mani Ratnam said, if Hindi cinema can stop calling itself Bollywood, then people will stop recognizing Indian cinema as Bollywood. I’m not a fan of jungle. Like Bollywood, Kollywood. We need to see it as Indian cinema as a whole. Other members of the panel included filmmakers Vetrimaaran and Basil Joseph and actor-director Rishabh Shetty.
The critically acclaimed Ponniyan Selvan brought Aishwarya Rai and Vikram together on screen for the second time. Prior to this, he was seen in the 2010 film Raavan directed by Mani Ratnam. It was also Vikram’s first Hindi film, in which he worked with Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Raavan was a tremendous success at the box office. Ponniyan Selvan-2 stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha and Jayam Ravi in lead roles. Prakash Raj, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayaram, Ashwin Kakumanu, Mohan Raman, Sarathkumar and Parthiban are part of the supporting cast. Composer AR Rahman, editor Sreekar Prasad and cinematographer Ravi Varman are part of the technical crew.
The second installment of Ponniyan Selvan is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name. The film will pick up from where the first part ended where the audience saw Ponniyan Selvan facing his death as Aishwarya Rai’s Oomai Rani jumps into the sea to save him. The film is produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
