Rejecting allegations of factionalism and internal differences in Hockey India, federation president Dilip Tirkey and general secretary Bholanath Singh said in a joint statement on Wednesday that they will continue to work together for the betterment of hockey.

In a joint statement issued by Hockey India, he said, “Recently some outgoing officials have said in the media that there is factionalism in Hockey India. This is not correct. We will continue to work together for the welfare of hockey.” After breaking ties with Indian hockey after 13 years, former CEO Elena Norman had said that the kind of environment that had developed in Hockey India, it was becoming difficult to work in it. And in such a situation he was left with no option but to resign. He had said that there are two groups in Hockey India. On one side are he and (President) Dilip Tirkey and on the other side are (Secretary) Bholanath Singh, (Executive Director) Commander RK Srivastava and (Treasurer) Shekhar J Manoharan. Earlier, women’s hockey team coach Yaneke Shopman had also resigned alleging biased attitude and lack of respect towards women’s hockey.

The Indian women’s hockey team had failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics, after which Shopman stepped down. Tirkey and Bholanath said in a joint statement, “Hockey India is an autonomous and professional body formed for the development of Indian hockey. Our goal is the betterment and progress of hockey and our players. Our national teams are given all kinds of support to perform at their best at the global level.

The statement said, “The federation has maintained an equitable approach to every player and team. All are given equal facilities and benefits, including cash awards and recognition. We believe in equality from the grassroots level to the state and national levels as well.” The statement said, ”We will make every possible effort to help the women’s team perform at its best. Along with this, we will provide all possible facilities to the men’s team to once again win a medal in the Paris Olympics.

It further said, “We need the continued support of hockey fans for our teams and our players.” For now, the entire focus should be on the Olympics.
