It is said that, Lord Vishnu saved his devoted disciple Prahlad from the nefarious intentions of his father Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashipu’s sister Holika was given a boon so that she could not burn in fire. Holika had a sheet, if she covered it and sat on the fire, she could remain completely safe from the fire. His intention was to use this power to kill Prahlad by making him sit in his lap. Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad and tried to burn him but it did not happen. A strong wind blew and the sheet covered Prahlad. Due to this, Prahlad was saved and Holika burnt to death. This happening shows the victory of good over evil. This day is celebrated as Holika Dahan.
