Hangzhou. India’s HS Prannoy won a bronze medal after losing 0-2 to world number 7 Li Shifeng of China in the men’s singles badminton semi-finals of the Asian Games here on Friday. Prannoy lost with the scores of 16-21, 9-21.

In a tough encounter, Prannoy looked sharp at the nets but struggled with back pain and was weak in defence, as the Chinese player tested him with his strokes and bowled him over.

Prannoy was slow on returns and prone to errors both at the net and on the line. The first game initially looked like a close contest, but the Chinese player sealed the victory with powerful smashes around the court.

Earlier, the 31-year-old won 21-16, 21-23, 22-20 to book a place in the semi-finals and secure India’s first medal in men’s singles since Syed Modi’s bronze medal in 1982.

India’s top-ranked men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also take to the court in the semi-finals during the day.
