I am glad that my film is not like ‘Bahubali’, it is still a little different from reality

It is our endeavor that more and more people watch and like our film. We are not paying so much attention to its earnings figures. It was my endeavor even while making the film that when the first part was liked by the people so much, then the responsibility was on me to make the second part even better for the audience.

Are you thinking of making such historical films in future also?
To be honest, there is no such thought in my mind right now. I am not thinking anything about it right now. As of now, I don’t have any plans to make another historical film.
Nowadays Hindi dubbed films of South languages are becoming very popular among Hindi speaking audience. What is your opinion about this?
I think it is a very good trend that if we make a film in any language and it is liked in every corner of the country, then it will be called good. If people are liking watching a film because of its good content, then it is a matter of happiness for its producer and cast.
Aditi Rao Hydari will be seen in Mani Ratnam’s next film
But don’t you think why it is too late for this to happen?
For the time being, we should be happy that now the audience is watching a good film of any language in their own language. Don’t worry about why this trend came late. If we look at the reason for this, then there can be many reasons for it. But now we have reached there and we are happy with it.
On the other hand remakes of South films are flopping at the Hindi box office. What would you say about this?
I think there are good and difficult times in the film industry. May be this is also the same period. I think we have a lot of good talent amongst us. There are many good filmmakers and actors among them. I hope that soon we will get out of this phase as well and good films will come.
Talk about South’s successful Hindi dubbed films, among them Telugu’s ‘Baahubali’, ‘RRR’, ‘Pushpa’ and Kannada’s KGF and Kantara are prominent. But Tamil films didn’t do any such thing?
I haven’t learned much about this. You only told me about this. I sincerely hope that our film ‘PS 2’ will clear this doubt.
Many people are comparing ‘PS1’ with the movie ‘Baahubali’, what do you think about it?
I would not like to say anything about this. I believe the film doesn’t look like Baahubali because we didn’t want to. It’s a historical fiction, but it still strays a bit from reality. So I am glad it is not like ‘Baahubali’. Every filmmaker wants to make his next film different from the previous films.
Recently you said that the Hindi film industry should not call itself Bollywood. Will this help the vernacular film industry?
No it will not help for other languages industry, but I said this because it will be good for Indian film industry. Due to this, people in the world will not know the Indian film industry by the name of Bollywood.
What do you think about OTT? Would you like to make something for OTT as well?
I think this is a good opportunity for every filmmaker. When a filmmaker has a large format story, you cannot complete each story in two or two and a half hours. That’s why I think many good filmmakers are already working on large format stories. This is a good thing. This trend is increasing rapidly in the last few years.
