Cinematographer-filmmaker Gangu Ramsay, one of the seven Ramsay Brothers, known for iconic horror films like “Puraani Haveli” and “Tahkhana”, died at a hospital here on Sunday morning, he was 83. His family members have given this information. According to the family, Gangu Ramsay was suffering from health problems for the last one month.
A statement issued by the family said, “With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of one of the Ramsay Brothers, renowned cinematographer, filmmaker and F.U. Ramsay’s second eldest son Gangu announces Ramsay’s death. He left us this morning at 8 am, at the age of 83. He was suffering from health problems in Kokilaben Hospital for the last one month. He breathed his last at 8 am today.
Gangu Ramsay’s daughter Geeta Ramsay and son Chander Ramsay are alive in Gangu Ramsay’s family. The family said that the last rites were performed at Oshiwara crematorium today at 2 pm.
Under the Ramsay Brothers banner founded by patriarch F.U. Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay lent his creative vision to over 50 iconic films, including “Veerana”, “Purana Mandir”, “Band Darwaza”, “Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche”, and Rishi. “Khoj” starring Kapoor. The Ramsay Brothers became synonymous with the genre and made B-grade films in the 1970s and 1980s that featured zombies, vampires, werewolves, reanimated corpses, and snowmen. These films were widely popular for their unique blend of horror and erotica.
According to Amborish Roychowdhury’s book “In a Cult of Their Own: Bollywood Beyond Box Office”, the 1972 horror film “Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche” was a great debut for the Ramsay Brothers and the Indian horror film industry.
The film production departments were divided among the seven brothers – Kumar Ramsay as screenwriter, Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay as directors, Gangu Ramsay as cinematographer, Kiran Ramsay as sound editor, Keshu Ramsay as assistant cinematographer, while Arjun Ramsay worked as post production man.
Gangu Ramsay also worked as a cinematographer in one of Saif Ali Khan’s early films, “Aashiq Awara”. She worked with Akshay Kumar in several films titled “Khiladi” such as “Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi”, “Sabse Bada Khiladi”, “Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi” as well as with veteran Kannada actor Vishnuvardhan.
The late cinematographer also worked in television, including shows like “The Zee Horror Show”, “Saturday Suspense”, “X Zone” and “Naagin”.
