If Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat lose in the trials of the World Championship, then their names can be cut from the Asian Games as well.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) A member of the ad-hoc committee appointed by the U.S. to run wrestling said that he would propose to the committee that if Bajrang Punia And Vinesh Phogat should be dropped from India’s Asian Games team if she loses the upcoming trials for the World Championships. Bajrang (men’s freestyle 65kg) and Vinesh (women’s 53kg) have been given direct entry into the Asian Games. Players in the other 16 weight categories of the Olympics were selected on the basis of the results of the trials held here on July 22 and 23.
The wrestlers who were on strike had asked for time
Bajrang, Vinesh and four other wrestlers, who staged a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in Delhi from April 21 to May 28, had sought time till August 10 to prepare for the trials. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), however, did not extend the deadline for sending wrestling entries beyond July 23. The decision of the ad-hoc committee to exempt Bajrang and Vinesh for the Asian Games trials was criticized and a section of the wrestling fraternity termed it as biased.
Bajrang will have to give world championship trial
Gyan Singh, a member of the committee, told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, ‘We will propose to the committee that if Bajrang and Vinesh win the world championship trials, then only they should be sent for the Asian Games, otherwise not. If Bajrang Punia loses the trials, he will be on stand-by and the winner of the Asian Games trials (Vishal Kaliraman) will go to China. Kaliraman (men’s freestyle 65kg) and Avinash Panghal (women’s 53kg) are standbys, having won Asian Games trials in the categories in which Bajrang and Vinesh compete.
Junior wrestlers are protesting
Apart from the top four finishers in the Asian Games trials, the six wrestlers (in their respective weight categories) who participated in the protest will be included in the trials for the World Championships. Gyan Singh said, ‘We are proposing that an eliminator match be held between the wrestlers who lost in the semi-finals of the trials held on July 22 and 23, and the winner will challenge the winner of the trials. The exempted wrestler will face the losing wrestler in the finals of the trials. He said, “After this, the winners of these two matches should face each other to make a place in the World Championship team.”
IOA will propose to ad-hoc committee
Gyan Singh said, ‘We are going to propose the same in the next meeting of the ad hoc committee. Let’s see if they agree. Apart from Bajrang and Vinesh, other wrestlers who will be placed in these groups include Sakshi Malik, her husband Satyavrat Kadian, Jitendra Kinha and Bajrang’s wife Sangeeta Phogat. Sakshi, Sangeeta, Kadian and Kinha did not participate in the trials for the Asian Games. Gyan Singh said that none of these six wrestlers has so far told him whether they will compete in the world championship trials or not.
Open trials will be held in non-Olympic weight categories
Gyan Singh told that open trials will be organized in non-Olympic weight categories where all eligible candidates will be allowed to compete. There will be a relaxation of up to two kg for all. The non-Olympic weight categories in men’s freestyle are 61 kg, 70 kg, 79 kg and 92 kg while in women’s wrestling they are 55 kg, 59 kg, 65 kg and 72 kg. In Greco Roman style there are 55 kg, 63 kg, 72 kg, 82 kg. The wrestlers who won the Asian Games trials, however, termed it unfair to organize another trial.
Every wrestler must attend trials
A wrestler who won the trial of the Asian Games said on the condition of confidentiality, ‘We have just completed a trial. Now let us train to prepare for the Games or again start preparing for another trial (for the World Championships). It is very difficult for the body. Instead of worrying about losing weight, now is the time to start preparing for the big tournament. It affects the body. Gyan Singh said that every wrestler will have to participate in the trial.
Statement of Bajrang and Vinesh came on exemption in trial
Facing flak from the wrestling world for accepting exemption from Asian Games trials, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia on Monday said they were pained that young wrestlers dragged them to court. But at the same time he is also happy that junior wrestlers have started fighting for their rights. Junior wrestlers Avinash Panghal and Sajit Kalkal approached the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the exemption but their plea was rejected. Both Bajrang and Vinesh, who are training abroad at different places, responded to the allegations by coming live on social media.
