In today’s time, more and more couples are giving importance to family planning to maintain balance in their professional and personal life and in such a situation the role of contraception becomes very important. Although the use of condoms or abstinence from sexual intercourse on the days of ovulation have been the most effective methods of preventing pregnancy, hormonal contraception has now replaced them. In this article Dr. Shravari Mundhe, Consultant Reproductive Medicine from Sarjapur explains what is hormonal contraception.

what is hormonal contraception
Today, hormonal contraception is available in several forms such as pills, patches, injections and intrauterine devices (IUDs). Hormonal contraception is generally safe for most women. But it can also have adverse effects and can aggravate other drugs or health problems, as can be the case with any other medicine. In such a situation, it becomes very important that you have a frank talk with your doctor about all the possible risks and benefits of using hormonal contraception.

How do birth control pills work
A woman becomes pregnant when the sperm fertilizes the egg released from the ovary. This fertilized egg attaches to the uterus and takes the form of a baby. Hormones in a woman’s body control processes such as ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary, and the preparation of the uterus for the entry of a fertilized egg. All hormonal contraceptives, including the pill, vaginal ring and patch, contain small amounts of the synthetic estrogen and progestin hormones. These hormones interfere with the body’s natural hormones to prevent pregnancy. Usually hormonal contraceptives prevent the body from ovulating ie producing eggs. In addition, they also interfere with the cervical mucus, making it more challenging for sperm to cross the cervix and reach the egg. They can also prevent pregnancy by changing the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.

Types of Hormonal Contraception
Oral contraceptives : You can adjust their dosage according to your need. Most of these have a ratio of estrogen and progestin. These cyclical use helps for regular menstrual cycle and continuous use helps for irregular menstrual cycle.
injectable progestin : It contains a type of progestin that is given as a shot every 12 weeks. It can take about a year for ovulation to start again after you stop taking the shots.
Skin Patch: It contains progestin and estrogen which is given once a week for three weeks followed by a patch-free week. Women who weigh more than 90 kg do not benefit much from it. Also, women using the patch may have higher estrogen levels than women taking the tablets. In such a situation, the risk of blood clots may increase.
Vaginal Ring: It is a small flexible ring containing progestin and estrogen. The ring is removed one week after three consecutive weeks of use. However, this ring can be temporarily removed during intercourse.
Progesterone intrauterine contraception : A small device containing progestin is inserted by the doctor into the uterine cavity. It remains effective for five years and can be withdrawn even earlier.
Implantable Form: The doctor inserts a single progesterone-containing rod under the skin. It remains active for three years and can also be withdrawn earlier.
