Indore: In the absence of Pat Cummins, stand-in captain Steve Smith, who led Australia to a memorable win against India, has made a big statement. Smith says he likes leading his team in India as there is a possibility of something happening with every ball, making the situation like a game of chess. Cummins, the regular captain of the team, has returned to Australia to take care of his ailing mother. Smith, who was the captain of the team on the 2017 tour of India, said that he would prefer to play on spinner-assisted pitches than the flat pitches he has had on this tour so far for five days.
Asked about the victory in the most challenging conditions, Smith said he is proud of his team as they bounced back brilliantly after losing the opening two Tests inside three days. Smith said in the press conference after the match, ‘It is very difficult to achieve such a victory. Smith said that he has fulfilled his responsibility of captaincy, this team belongs to Cummins and he will lead it. He said, ‘My time (captaincy) is over. It is now Paddy’s (Pat Cummins) team. I am happy that I took over the reins this week in circumstances when Cummins is not here.
The spin-friendly pitches at the Holkar Stadium drew criticism but Smith is not bothered by it and relishes such a challenge. He said, ‘India is the part of the world that I love to captain. It is like a game of chess, every ball has some meaning. You have to think one step ahead. This is my favorite place in the world to captain.
