IND vs ENG, 1st Test, Day 3: India all out for 436 runs, England 89/1 till lunch

Hyderabad (Uttam Hindu News): Ravindra Jadeja became the third Indian player to miss a century as India were all out for 436 runs in their first innings in the morning session on Saturday, the third day of the first cricket Test. England has scored 89 runs after losing one wicket till lunch. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett survived early bat-pad chances and came into the attack with their reserves of sweeps and reverse-sweeps to score quick runs.

At lunch, England’s score is 89/1 in 15 overs and despite the pitch being very slow, they are scoring runs at a fast pace in the second innings. In the morning, India was all out for 436 runs after adding just 15 runs to its total score and took a good lead of 190 runs.

Joe Root dismissed top run scorer Ravindra Jadeja for 87 runs, after which he and Rehan Ahmed took the remaining two wickets. Root was the best bowler for England, taking 4 wickets for 79 runs, while Rehan and debutant Tom Hartley took two wickets each.

In England’s second innings, Crawley took a positive path early on, reverse-sweeping Ashwin twice while hitting a four to Jasprit Bumrah. Crawley’s positive strokeplay continued with a six down the ground to Axar Patel and a four off Ashwin through an exquisite cover drive.

But Ashwin eventually dismissed the right-handed Crawley with a single round the wicket and his forward defense took the outside edge to Rohit Sharma at slip, ending the 45-run opening partnership. From the other end, Duckett made a brilliant sweep and hit three fours on Ashwin and Akshar.

Duckett’s attacking influence worked well for Ollie Pope (16 not out), who looked better and more assured than in his confusing first innings, as seen by his cracking square-drive past point off Axar’s ball. After this, Duckett hit a four with a traditional sweep against Axar and remained unbeaten on 38 at lunch, which spoiled the length of the Indian spinners.

Earlier, Root and Mark Wood started the morning with eight quiet overs to keep Jadeja and Axar in check. As soon as Leach, who was suffering from a left knee injury, came into the attack, Axar took full advantage of his overpitched balls by hitting back-to-back cover drives for boundaries.

But Root bounced back to LBW Jadeja on an off-break ball that was not taking much turn, making the left-handed batsman the third Indian batsman to be dismissed in the innings after crossing 80. On the very next ball, Root bowled Bumrah with an off-break delivery from round the wicket.

Akshar went on the backfoot to cut Rehan, but the leg-break delivery remained low to the batsman and hit the stumps, ending India’s innings.
