Indian batsmen have once again given England a chance to make a comeback, but despite this, the visiting team got a record target of 399 runs on Sunday, the third day of the second cricket test, in response to which they scored 67 runs for one wicket. The first blow to England was given by experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Like the first Test of the series in Hyderabad, India once again had a chance to oust England from the match with its batting, but despite a century by Shubman Gill (104 runs in 147 balls), India was reduced to 255 runs in the second innings. The host team lost its last six wickets for 44 runs.
Chasing the target, openers Jack Crowley (29 not out) and Ben Duckett (28) gave a good start to England by adding 50 runs for the first wicket in 11 overs. Ashwin (one wicket for eight runs) broke this partnership by getting Duckett caught by wicketkeeper Kona Bharat.
At the end of the day’s play, night watchman Rehan Ahmed was supporting Crowley by scoring nine runs. England still needs 332 runs to win. The pitch is not difficult for batting but some balls are staying low. However, England has got a record target to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
West Indies had won by scoring 395 runs in Bangladesh two years ago, which is the biggest win while chasing a target in Asia. At one point in the second innings, the Indian team was in a very good position after scoring 211 runs for four wickets but the lower order once again disappointed.
In the second innings, Gill recovered from his bad form and scored a century. He added 89 runs for the fifth wicket with Axar Patel (45 runs in 84 balls) but after the break of this partnership, it did not take much time for the Indian innings to collapse. After tea, Rehan Ahmed (3 wickets for 88 runs) sent Bharat (06) to the pavilion in the very first over.
In the next over of Tom Hartley (four wickets for 77 runs), Kuldeep Yadav (00) waved the ball in the air and gave an easy catch to Duckett. Jasprit Bumrah lasted for 26 balls but became Hartley’s fourth victim without opening the account. Rehan ended India’s innings by getting Ashwin (29) caught by wicketkeeper Fox.
After struggling initially on the third day, Gill completed his third Test century. The letters also appeared to be in good rhythm. Gill completed his half-century before lunch and adopted an aggressive attitude against the spinners.
Leg spinner Rehan adopted the strategy of bowling round the wicket but Gill hit him for a straight six and then hit two consecutive fours in the same over. Gill completed his century in the 52nd over of Shoaib Bashir’s innings. He was successful in crossing the 50-run mark for the first time in the last 13 innings.
However, after completing his century, Gill returned to the pavilion trying to play a reverse sweep on Bashir’s ball. The ball hit Gill’s gloves and bounced in the air and wicketkeeper Ben Fox took an easy catch. Gill hit 11 fours and two sixes in his innings. After this, Akshar also got trapped LBW after missing a straight ball from Hartley.
