IND vs SA ODI: India defeated South Africa by 8 wickets, Sai Sudarshan’s debut fifty, Arshdeep’s 5 wickets

India has defeated South Africa by 8 wickets in the first ODI in a one-sided match. In the first bowling, Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan bowled brilliantly and after that Sai Sudarshan and Shreyas Iyer scored fifties.

When India came out to chase the target of 117 runs, Ruturaj Gaikwad and debutant Sai Sudarshan looked in good form. But India lost the wicket of Gaikwad in the fourth over. Shreyas Iyer came to bat at number three.

There was a partnership of 88 runs between Sudarshan and Iyer. Both completed their respective half-centuries. The team’s score was 111 runs when Iyer was out. But Sudarshan, who scored his debut fifty, remained steadfast till the end. Tilak Verma remained not out after scoring one run.

Earlier, the South African batsmen succumbed to the brilliant bowling of Indian fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan. The team was out for just 116 runs in 27.3 overs. Arshdeep took five wickets for 37 runs in his quota of 10 overs.

Avesh took four wickets for 27 runs in eight overs. One success was achieved by Kuldeep Yadav (one wicket for three runs). For South Africa, Andile Phehlukwayo contributed 33 runs and opener Tony de Jorzi contributed 28 runs.

In the absence of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, South African batsmen looked uncomfortable against the young Indian fast bowlers. The trio of Arshdeep, Avesh and Mukesh Kumar (46 runs without success in seven overs) had taken a total of seven wickets before this match but in this match itself they shared nine wickets.

However, luck did not favor Mukesh. His appeal for LBW on the very first ball of the innings was rejected by the on-field umpire and the team decided not to take a review. However, Reeza Hendricks was seen out in the replays. South Africa was all out for just 83 runs in its last ODI (World Cup) against India in Kolkata.

Only three players of the team that played the World Cup final for India, captain KL Rahul, wrist spinner Kuldeep and middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer were part of this match. In such a situation, the young fast bowlers of the team impressed with their talent.

The Indian bowlers ensured that most of the South African batsmen did not get a chance to come out of the crease or go on the backfoot. During this, both Arshdeep and Avesh had a chance to take hat-trick wickets but they missed it.

Arshdeep took four wickets in the powerplay after dismissing Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen without opening the account on consecutive balls in the second over of the innings. This also includes the wickets of aggressive batsman Tony De Jorji (28) and Heinrich Klaasen (06). Jorji hit two fours and two sixes in his 22-ball innings. Eighth order batsman Phehlukwayo played an inning of 33 runs and took the team’s score beyond 100 runs.
