India and Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary retires from all forms of cricket

Kolkata: Veteran India and Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Tiwary represented India in 12 ODIs and three T20Is, with his best innings in international cricket being an unbeaten 104 against the West Indies in a 50-over match at Chennai in 2011. Apart from his sporadic appearances for India, Tiwary was a formidable figure in Bengal’s batting line-up, scoring 9908 runs in 141 first-class matches at an average of 48.56, including 29 centuries and 45 half-centuries. His best score was 303 not out. He also captained Bengal to reach the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy final, where the team finished runners-up, losing to Saurashtra. Tiwary also scored 5581 runs in 169 List A games and 3436 runs in 183 T20 games. Tiwari is currently the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports in the Government of West Bengal. Tiwari said in a note on his Instagram account on Thursday, “Goodbye to the game of cricket.

This sport has given me everything, I mean everything that I could never even dream of, from the time my life was challenged with different kinds of difficulties. I will always be grateful to this game and God, who has always been with me. After scoring 796 runs at 99.50 in the Ranji Trophy in 2006–07, Tiwary came into national limelight and was included in India’s squad for the tour of Bangladesh, where a shoulder injury during practice kept him out of international cricket. Denied debut. His international debut finally came in 2008 during the Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia, where a jet-lagged Tiwary faced Brett Lee and scored only two runs. He then played two ODIs in the West Indies and England before scoring his maiden ODI century against the Caribbean team in Chennai in 2011 – 104 off 126 balls, after which he retired hurt due to a hamstring strain.

Despite that century, Tiwary was surprisingly ruled out for several months before getting his chance again in ODIs in Sri Lanka in 2012 and was named in the Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Tiwary then returned to India’s squad for the ODI tour of Bangladesh in 2014 and last played international cricket as a member of the second-row squad against Zimbabwe in 2015, scoring 34 runs in three ODIs. “I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to those who have played a role in my cricketing journey. Tiwary was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team that won the IPL 2012 trophy under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy and scored the winning run against Chennai Super Kings in the final. Apart from Kolkata, he also played for Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and the now defunct Rising Pune Supergiants. Overall, he played 98 IPL matches, scoring 1695 runs at a strike rate of 116.98, including seven half-centuries. “Many thanks to my wife who has always been there for me since she came into my life.
