The competitions of Indian players ended on Saturday. No athlete from the country is in the field in some of the events scheduled on the last day of the competition on Sunday. Indian players set a new record with 107 medals in Hangzhou. This figure will definitely remain in the minds of the players at least till the next Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in 2026.
Indian players had won 70 medals in Indonesia in 2018 but in Hangzhou they made a big improvement by winning 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze medals. Indian players won 12 medals on the last day of their campaign, which include six gold, four silver and two bronze medals. In wrestling, Bajrang Punia disappointed, while in badminton men’s doubles, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made the fans happy by winning the gold medal. In Kabaddi, the men’s and women’s teams bounced back from disappointment in Jakarta and won gold medals. Young archers Ojas Deotale and Abhishek Verma won gold and silver medals in the compound men’s individual event. Archer Jyoti Vennam also had her golden moment on the final day of the country’s competition.
By securing the top position in the individual women’s compound event, she showed the sports superpower South Korea that India is now matching them. The men’s and women’s chess teams ended the day with two silver medals each, placing India at fourth position behind China, Japan and South Korea. There is no change in India’s fourth position as fifth-placed Uzbekistan has 22 gold medals compared to India’s 28. India also won 51 medals from shooters (22) and track and field athletes (29 medals). With this, India had left behind its previous best performance in these games on Wednesday itself.
The Indian contingent also won several unexpected medals, including a bronze for the women’s table tennis team (Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ahika Mukherjee).Parul Choudhary won gold in the women’s 5000 meters race by doing wonders in the last 30 meters. In javelin throw, Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal and Kishore Jena won the silver medal. Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh won historic bronze in canoeing while Rambabu and Manju Rani also got bronze in 35 km walk.
