Hangzhou. With determination in heart and hockey sticks in hands, the Indian men’s hockey team is all set to begin its journey for the 19th Asian Games here.

Having recently won the Asian Champions Trophy 2023, the Indian team is eager to carry forward the momentum and make their country proud by winning the gold medal.

Interestingly, the Indian team has a rich history in the Asian Games as they have won three gold medals (1966, 1998, 2014), nine silver medals ((1958, 1962, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1990, 1994, 2002 ) and has won three bronze medals (1986, 2010, 2018) so far in the marquee tournament.

Therefore, the Indian team will aim to continue their stellar performance and go all out for the gold medal as this will help them secure direct qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Notably, India have been placed in Pool A along with Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Singapore and Uzbekistan in the 19th Asian Games and they will start their campaign against Uzbekistan on September 24.

Pool B includes Korea, Malaysia, China, Oman, Thailand and Indonesia. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, India captain Harmanpreet Singh, whose consistency and leadership has played a key role in India’s recent success, expressed his excitement and motivation for the upcoming tournament. He said, “It is an honor to represent the tricolor on the international stage, and we are ready to give our all at the Asian Games. Ahead of the tournament, we have gone through challenging practice sessions, and each member camped fully Focused and dedicated. Our target is clear – to win the gold medal and earn direct qualification for the Paris Olympics next year.”

Also, coach Craig Fulton, who is constantly working with the team to improve their strategies and skills, believes that unity and discipline will be the key to success in Hangzhou. He said, “We have been preparing hard, focusing on teamwork and mental strength. We have talent in our team, and now it is about executing our plans effectively on the field. We are ready to face the competition.” And eager to make India proud.”

After facing Uzbekistan in their opening match on September 24, the Indian team is scheduled to face Singapore, Japan and Pakistan on September 26, 28 and 30 respectively. Their last group stage match will be against Bangladesh on October 2.
