Indian women’s football team loses to Thailand, fails to qualify for knockouts

The Indian women’s football team failed to qualify for the Asian Games knockout stage after a 0-1 defeat to Thailand here on Sunday. The Indian team presented a challenge to the higher ranked Thailand team. But with the help of Thongrong Parichat’s goal in the 52nd minute, Thailand team emerged victorious in their Group B match. The Indian team had lost 1-2 to Chinese Taipei in the opening match of the Asiad. This defeat against Thailand also ended India’s chance of being among the three second-placed teams who will reach the knockouts along with the top five teams from the five groups.

India made a composed start to the match and the way their players were creating chances, they looked a much better team than their opponent. Anju Tamang created a great chance for India in the 11th minute but her low cross failed. Five minutes later, Manisha Kalyan along with Bala Devi and Dangmei Grace created two chances but the team could not take advantage of it. Thailand’s defensive line blocked Manisha’s shot in the 25th minute and a minute later, Grace’s shot went over the bar. Thailand also created a chance through Chethabutr Kanyanat but Ashalata Devi and goalkeeper Shreya Hooda thwarted it. Earlier, the score was 0-0 after the first half. In the second half, Thailand intensified its efforts for the goal.

India tried to stop them but could not do so for long. Parichat gave his team the lead in the 52nd minute with a shot from Pengangm Saowalak’s pass. After this, India tried to make a comeback by making some strong moves. Manisha made two attempts but the Thailand goalkeeper stopped them and her shots were declared offside twice. In the end, Thailand defeated all India’s attempts to equalize and registered victory.
