The Indian women’s hockey team failed to automatically qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing third at the Hangzhou Asian Games, but will get another chance to make it to the event in next year’s qualifying tournament in Ranchi. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has shifted the women’s Olympic qualifiers from Changzhou, China to Ranchi. China’s women’s team earned a direct berth in the Paris Games by winning Asian Games gold in Hangzhou earlier this month. The Paris Olympic qualifying tournament will be held from January 13 to 19 next year at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
Apart from India, seven countries will participate in the qualifying tournament, out of which the top three will secure their place in next year’s Olympics. FIH’s other Olympic qualifiers will be played in Muscat, Oman (men: January 15-21, 2024) and Valencia, Spain (women and men: January 13-21, 2024). India had lost 0-4 to host China in the women’s hockey semi-finals of the Hangzhou Asian Games. The team then had to be satisfied with the bronze medal after defeating Japan 2-1. On hosting the Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, “This is a huge event for our players and we are thrilled that it will be held on our home ground.
The support of the Indian fans will energize our players who are determined to secure their place at the Paris 2024 Olympics.” Indian team captain Savita Punia said, “Hosting the Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi is great news as it gives us the opportunity to promote Indian hockey. The presence of fans will motivate more than ever to secure a place for the Paris 2024 Olympics.” Before the Olympic qualifiers, the Indian team will play in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Ranchi from October 27 to November 5. The home team will face Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand in the tournament.
