IndiaTheNews Newsroom: Neeraj Chopra creates history again, becomes first Indian to win gold in World Athletics Championship

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra once again created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. He achieved this feat with a throw of 88.17 meters in the men’s javelin throw event. Such was India’s dominance in the javelin throw final that three of the top six were from India, and for the first time in a World Championship, there were three Indians in the top eight. Kishor Jena finished fifth in the final held late on Sunday night with a personal best throw of 84.77m. While DP Manu finished sixth with a best throw of 84.14 metres.

The 25-year-old Chopra produced the best throw in the second after the first attempt was fouled. After this he threw throws of 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m and 83.98m. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the silver with a season’s best throw of 87.82m and Yakub Walesh of the Czech Republic won the bronze with a season’s best throw of 86.67m. Chopra started with a foul but took the lead on the second attempt which lasted till the end. Pakistan’s Nadeem also came second after the third round and in the end both of them got the first two places.

Let us tell you that after shooter Abhinav Bindra, Chopra became the second Indian to win the Olympics and the World Championship at the same time. Bindra won the world championship at the age of 23 and Olympic gold at the age of 25. Chopra became the first Indian to win a gold medal in athletics at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. He had won a silver medal at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene. Before her, Anju Bobby George had won a bronze medal in the long jump at the Paris World Championships in 2003. He became the third javelin thrower to win the Olympic and world titles at the same time. Before him Jan Zelejny of Czech Republic and Andreas T of Norway have done this feat. Zelezny won Olympic titles in 1992, 1996 and 2000, while winning the world championships in 1993, 1995 and 2001. Andreas won the 2008 Olympics and the 2009 World Championships.

Now Chopra has all the titles in his name. He won the Asian Games (2018), Commonwealth Games (2018) gold besides four Diamond League titles and the Diamond League champions trophy last year. He was the Junior World Champion in 2016 and won the Asian Championship title in 2017. Meanwhile, India’s men’s 4x400m relay team, which qualified for the final for the first time by breaking the Asian record, finished fifth in the final. India’s quartet of Mohd Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Mohd Ajmal Wariyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh clocked 2:59.92 in the final.

Parul Chowdhary clocked a national record of 9:15.31 but finished 11th in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. The previous record was held by Lalita Babar (9:19.76) who finished eighth in the 2015 World Championships. Chopra’s gold sent cheers to the Indian camp on the final day of the championship.
