Warsaw. Tennis world number-1 Iga Swiatek on Saturday evening won Poland’s Sportsperson of the Year award for 2023.
Sportsperson of the Year is considered one of the most prestigious sports awards in Poland, reports Xinhua news agency.
Iga Swiatek’s victory was expected as the 22-year-old has won six titles in 2023.
The Polish star defended her crown at Roland Garros and also achieved top podium finishes at Warsaw (WTA 250), Stuttgart and Doha (WTA 500) and WTA 1000.
She then ended her season on a high note by winning the WTA Finals in Cancún, Mexico.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to the ceremony, but as you know I’m in the United Cup tournament. Every vote means a lot to me,” Inga Swiatek said in a video. How much support we are getting from the fans.”
His father, Tomasz Światek, was present at the ceremony in place of Inga. He said that Inga would not have been so successful without the hard work of her entire team.
Bartosz Zmarzlik finished second behind Swiatek while volleyball player Aleksandar Slivka came third in the vote. FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, who won the title of La Liga top scorer in 2023. Fans were quite surprised as his name was not in the top-10.
