If I talk about choice, then when I was doing ‘Jawani Jaaneman’, many people said that it is very risky to play the role of a pregnant girl, but I did not know that being pregnant can be a risky job. Is. It felt very natural to me. I liked the story of the film, I liked my character and after auditioning I got such a film. When I read the script during ‘Freddy’, when that turning point comes and my character changes completely and I become a villain. There were strong actors like Karthik in the film, so I did not think even for a minute that there is a risk. Somewhere I felt that this film would prove to be the turning point for my career and it happened. Now even in my new film ‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’, I am wearing school clothes with two braids, so many people would think that this is also a risk, because I am a little young girl. I think every film has some or the other risk. If I can connect with the script and trust the director, then I do that film.
How far can you go for love in real life?
I don’t believe in crazy love. I think if there is love in your life, like the love between a child and its parents, it is a beautiful love. I believe in healthy love, so that I can grow and my partner can grow, so love is good as long as it is healthy. And I think if there is any problem then there should be an approach to solve it. So I believe in supportive love. Love should be constructive not destructive. Dil jala type love is a very stupid idea, because love gives you courage, it doesn’t destroy you.
Your director in ‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’ is Anurag Kashyap, have you heard that he gets angry easily?
No, not at all! He didn’t get angry on our sets even for a second. They are like teddy bears. Always happy and always encouraging. I don’t think I have seen Anurag sir getting angry even once in the last 4 years. I feel when you do a film with Anurag Kashyap, it is a masterclass in acting, because his approach is very different, so like I remember when I went on the set on the first day, I asked him a lot Was what to prepare, how to do it and he said, come on the set, everything else will happen on the set itself. I was the girl leaving after preparing the set. Then when I went to the set, there were not more than two takes for each scene and the lines were found only when we reached the set, whatever you can remember quickly, everyone else speaks naturally. It was a very different and spontaneous experience for me. I learned from him how to be instinctive while acting. So it will be helpful in my upcoming films as well.
How did a well-known director like Anurag Kashyap sign you?
Actually I had signed this film before ‘Jawani Jaaneman’. I remember I met Anurag sir when my maternal grandfather (actor Kabir Bedi) called him. At that time I was giving a lot of auditions and meeting because I was not getting any film. I requested my maternal grandfather that you please introduce me to Anurag sir and I only want to meet him. I have made a reel and all I have to do is show this reel to Anurag sir. I then went to Anurag sir’s office, which was also his house and there were a lot of people there at that time. At that time he also discouraged me a lot. He told me that I only make crooked films, you will not be able to do that. I requested him to watch only the reel. Saying this I left from there. Anurag sir saw that reel and offered me the film after 7 minutes. After 2 months, I got the sweetheart of my youth.
You are very famous on social media and many memes were made about ‘Freddy’. What kind of reactions did you get from the fans?
Even today people ask me on social media how are my teeth? Hardy should not have been killed and thirdly it is said that he should have said sorry. These three comments keep coming on my every post.
In your film Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat, you fall in love with a singer after being influenced by it. Ever been infatuated with a celebrity in real life?
Lady Gaga is an artist. She has been very cool, rebellious and very fearless, so I used to admire her a lot, because seeing her fearlessness, I was a big fan of Lady Gaga and still am. But it never happened that I could go for his show, but someday I will definitely meet him. I will definitely meet at least once.
Recently, on the Boycott trend, the PM had said that leaders should avoid unnecessary statements on films. Do you think this will change the Boycott Brigade?
I hope so. I think when a film is boycotted, not only the producer and director are affected but many other people associated with the film also go through difficulties.
How much are you related to your maternal grandfather Kabir Bedi?
I think I have learned a lot as a human being. If any question comes in my mind, I always ask him whether it is about work or life. And they answer very thoughtfully. Many times they keep thinking about me. And message later. I have also read his book and got to learn a lot from it. His advice is always solid.
Do you look up to your mom Pooja Bedi as a mentor?
I don’t take much career advice from anyone, because I feel when we get too many opinions, we get confused. I have a team, I take advice only from those people.
How important are awards to you?
Awards are important because everyone needs validation. When Jawaani Jaaneman released, I had only one thing in my mind that I have to win that debut film fair because it can happen only once in a lifetime. And as soon as I got that award, I felt that I can breathe.
