After the release of ‘Shehzada’, fans are giving you the tag of ‘Shehzada’, how do you see it?
I believe in this thing and I think very few people are able to identify such a thing. People are identifying me and have started calling me Shahzada. It has been my entire journey, not just the film. The way I have been entertaining people, this title seems well fitted here. It is not that I got this name from the debut film itself, but I got this title after proving myself. And only then people can digest it. When people tell me that you seem worthy of this title, then you have to prove yourself through your work. I feel very happy that a title like this has been given to me. I hope this film does as well as my previous films did. You will not be disappointed when you go to the theatre. In theatre, you will get a lot of emotion, humour, action and I have achieved all in my best-way possible.
What was the most difficult phase of your career for you?
The biggest struggle for me was to reach the first film, because then I did not know anyone. It was very difficult for me to reach the audition. I didn’t even know the casting directors. In such a situation, it used to be a struggle to reach there. After that got the first film. But when I did not get recognition even after that, then the time of 6-7 years was the most difficult and scary for me. Then I started thinking whether I would have anything in this industry or not. This was till ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’ came along. That was a phase when I didn’t know whether I was doing the right thing or not. But I kept moving forward believing in myself that it will happen someday. It was a very difficult time, but the films that came after that and when they did well, have brought me to this height. I am proud that there has been a struggle in my life and because of that struggle I have seen such a phase in my life. That’s why I appreciate these heights today.
Any incident where you had to starve or something like that?
I think it is very important to be inspired. I have said earlier also that if I can become, then anyone can become here. I grew up in Gwalior, where there was no name-o-sign of the industry. Didn’t even know how to work in the industry. I come from a middle class family, where the family also had a lot of debt. More than half of my life has been spent watching this, where my parents are working very hard to pay off the loan. So I used to watch their struggle. When I came to Mumbai, there was no one to take care of me and giving auditions and buying clothes and all that. For example, if there were two-three auditions, I used to change clothes at the railway station. I used to come everyday from Belapur, Kharghar to Bandra or Andheri and it used to be a 2 hour journey. Sometimes he used to go by road also, then he used to go on sharing by paying 5 rupees that some money would be saved.
At that time the family did not have my address. And even if he had known, he would not have been able to give me any money. If there was anything more than my hostel fees, I did not ask for anything from them, because I knew that if I could not get anything, then there is no use in asking. I used to share a room with 12 people. Even when I was shooting for Pyaar Ka Punchnama, 12 of us lived in a 2BHK house. All those people used to give auditions and I also used to give. I didn’t tell him that I got a film. For that entire film, I got some 70 thousand rupees in a year and a half. At that time there was a different struggle. Yes, it was so much that he never remained in self-grief. Always believed in myself and worked hard, and believed that nothing has happened right now, but when it happens in future, it will be very big.
How does it feel today when roles are written for you? Is price money for you?
Now that is happening. I wanted to be at this position in life where roles are being written for me. Today, when writers come and say that we have written roles thinking of you only and directors say that no one but you comes to my mind, I go into flashback hearing that sometimes I used to stand in line to reach these people. Used to stand and now he is writing the role for me. I love this circle of life. I am very happy that yes, God is with me and hard work is paying off.
As an actor, to what extent did you go for action or how was it like doing action in the film?
I go all out in my films. Be it ‘Freddy’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ or ‘Shehzada’, I enjoy exploring genres. Whether I am doing horror comedy, doing dark thriller or doing action, these were all my firsts. It was very exciting for me as an actor. My excitement in this is that I am doing action for the first time. For the first time speaking dialogue in swag. The main point of it is that the film is an emotion-drama, and it will keep the audience hooked. There is a need for a mass entertainer, which I will feel with this film.
What was it like to slap Paresh Rawal?
It is a very important and big scene of this film. When we did that scene, Paresh ji supported me a lot. Said that you do I was a little nervous because he is such a veteran actor. He told me in front that whatever is happening in the performance, let it happen, don’t think. Then everyone is watching what happened after that, because the feeling and anger that came in him was of a different level. I would like to give credit to Paresh ji because it was because of him that I became comfortable.
How was your experience with Kriti Sanon?
It was a great experience. Kriti is a very good actor. I had also done ‘Lukka Chuppi’ with him and in that too people liked our pairing very much. This time also I feel that it is going to happen because our chemistry is very good. I think people love to see both of us together, and that will happen in this film as well.
What would you like to say about Boycott?
I think he should not be in any industry.

What do you think today’s audience wants?
I try to make my films more relatable so that people can relate. What I see in my childhood or in between, I keep it very audience centric. I always keep the film according to today’s audience. This works for me. I have that feeling somewhere that the audience is going to like it. I want the audience to go to full theaters in my film and the board of Housefull should be displayed outside. I don’t think there is any bigger verdict than the audience verdict. I believe that if the audience is rejecting the film, then 99 percent of the time they are right. The audience understands that man it is right, it is fun here, or it is not right, it is not fun here.
Navbharat Times wants to know what is your relationship status?
Even if I do meet someone, it comes written as dating. Friends can be friends too. I have stopped worrying now. But I would like to tell people that I am single. I don’t have time for anything other than work right now. Whenever I go into a relationship, I will come out and tell.

how do you look at love
I think there should be a lot of compassion in love. It should not be about how much the other person is loving you. Then whether it is family, relationship or with anyone. You should just pay attention to what you are giving to the person in front of you. There should not be much bargaining in this matter. I think a truth is very important in love. There should be love and trust on each other. Respect for each other and respect for each other’s work is very important.
What attracts you the most in a girl?
Intelligence.
What are the things that keep you grounded?
I think as the status increases, people think hey it is not changing, so it has changed. You don’t know what will happen tomorrow, because it is a very temporary thing. Changes cannot come from this. If the change is coming in your behaviour, then you are like that. I believe that whatever nature I have, it is all because of my parents. He has taught me to respect everyone since childhood. High and low have not been taught at my house.

I want to continue to entertain people in every film, and do successful interviews.
How do you look at the upcoming films and your lineup?
I am very excited for these lineups. I don’t think about just one film, but also about my lineup. My upcoming films are also smartly thought out. No one knows what is going to happen in the future, it seems to be intelligence now. All these films with Kabir Khan, Anurag Basu, Sameer sir are with the right makers. Because I feel that I am doing those films, by which people are getting entertained.

Have a dream role?
More than the role, the real dream for me is the makers I want to work with. As Bhansali sir is, so whatever role he will give for his film, it will be like a dream role for me.
