Manoj Bajpayee also told why he chose a film like ‘Gulmohar’. Also, when the actor was asked about the boycott of Bollywood films, he said one lakh taka. Here is an exclusive interview with him.
What was the reason for choosing ‘Gulmohar’?
The only reason to choose any script is the script. If you do any film, then first of all we see the script, what is there in it. When you read then only you get to know whether I am going to be a part of it or not otherwise if I tell the truth, I read 25-30 pages mostly of the script. I never read the entire script because as a reader till 25-30 pages if I am not able to connect with the story or the craft of the story or relate to the characters then after that much the audience too. Will not be able to see But the films that you do, you do not even know when you started and when you finished, so the most different thing about this film is that it is a family film but it is not the family film that we used to see. Are. There is some strange thing about it that despite everything, despite being a family film, despite being a beautiful film, it is very progressive, or rather, it is a bit rough on one side, so I like that roughness. came in this film.
Roles are written specifically for you now, so how do you see this change?
I’ve been very lucky, to be honest. No one had imagined OTT. I came in the industry at that time, when script was not even a trend, it was not even a tradition that you could ask someone for a script, and after ‘Satya’ came, I got a power and then I started asking for scripts, but even then Scripts were not available that way. From there till here and I did not think that actors like me who came from theater or many great actors came, be it Irrfan, KK, Nawaz, or Pankaj or Vijay or Jaideep, all these people are so amazing. Cinema could give us the opportunity to an extent, but if anyone had the ability to live our way of life, choose our way and fulfill our dreams, it was only with OTT, because when If you start judging by numbers then we will not stand anywhere. Whatever we wanted to do, we did but box office numbers always put us in the back row.
But OTT not only gave work to artists like us but also told people that they should be celebrated, given respect or see their work. There is a certain type of star for box office numbers, whose films the audience goes to watch because they want to be entertained and we don’t do anything for entertainment. We want to tell the story. So that’s why we could only go to an extent in the theater and beyond that only OTT could take us.
What was the most difficult phase for you as an actor?
There have been many difficult times. I have done many good films, but none was doing well commercially. Be it Woh Dil Par Mat Le Yaar or 1971 which is such an amazing film. When it came on YouTube, it was called a digital blockbuster. Be it ‘Pinjar’ or ‘Budhia Singh’, all these films were not right according to the box office numbers. After that people stopped giving me work or rather stopped offering me work. So that period of not getting work or not getting my kind of script and working on it, so that your kitchen could run, was the most difficult phase for me. Because I didn’t want to do that work, yet I had to do it because I had to survive. When you are working to survive, it is not a good state to be in. Nothing can be more sad for an artist than not being able to lead life in his own way or work in his own way.
How much has being a father or a husband helped you become an actor?
See when you respect the house, the house respects you and I believe this straight. My wife has a big hand in my marriage going so well. I think the sacrifice she has made in raising our baby girl, you can never repay the debt of whatever sacrifice she makes and in most of the cases it is the woman who makes the sacrifice. It is a debt that also hurts my heart, now that my daughter has gone to the hostel, when I see my wife in a function or sitting in the evening or talking to people or expressing an individuality, it I have never been more happy and this is because I have not done it for so many years. She has played the role of a mother in a focused manner. Whatever I am today, I do not give credit to my parents because I left home at the age of 18, yes, they gave you the freedom to do whatever you want. But after that the way Shabana (his actress wife) has supported me ever since I got married, I might not be here if it weren’t for her.
How was the experience with Sharmila Tagore?
We only remember songs when we see him. I used to sing in his presence as well. My parents were very fond of watching films and that is probably why I became an actor. Whenever he used to come from the villages to the city, he always used to take us from the hostel to show the film. So in our city, movies always used to come for the second or third time, in that I remember that we used to be crazy about Sharmila ji’s songs from films like Evening in Paris, Daag, so we have always been a fan in front of her and are fans even today. But he gave us so much freedom so that we can talk to him and talk like a friend talks. The amount of respect she gives to the person in front is amazing.
What is your opinion on Boycott?
Why focus so much on Boycott? We give so much attention to social media otherwise. If you stop looking at the phone and if you are eating food with a friend in a restaurant, then the social media boycott will not bother you at all. So don’t be so curious about what people are telling you. If you are also going on Twitter, then leave after saying your words. Put your beautiful photo on insta and leave. If the rest of the world burns, let it burn.
