Chennai, 6 February (HS). For the first time in history, young Indian chess players have occupied five positions, including the top spot, in the junior world rankings. In the latest ranking list of International Chess Federation (FIDE) among Grandmasters (GM), R. Praggnanand (Elo rating 2747) is at the top, while, D. Gukesh (2743) is at third place, Nihal Sarin (2693) is at sixth place, Raunak Sadhwani (2654) is at seventh position and Leon Luc Mondonca (2631) is at tenth position.
Interestingly, Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh will be playing in the upcoming Candidates Tournament in Canada. The winner of the tournament will challenge World Chess Champion Liren Ding (2762) for the world title.
In the girls category too, two Indian players are in the top 10 club, Saryu Velapula (2444) is at second place and Divya Deshmukh is at third place. In the women’s category, India’s experienced GM Koneru Humpy is in third place with a rating of 2554. Humpy will also play among the women’s candidates in Canada. Although not ranked in the top ten in the world, WGM R. Vaishali will also compete in the Women Candidates Tournament. However, no Indian chess player is in the top ten in the open category.
