Chennai (IANS): Tamil superstar and MNM founder president Kamal Haasan is likely to contest from the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections. Highly-placed sources in the MNM told IANS that the DMK was interested in allotting the Coimbatore seat to Kamal Haasan as he had performed exceptionally well in the 2021 assembly polls, losing to BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan by a narrow margin of 1,728 votes. Kamal Haasan on Sunday inaugurated MNM’s state level outreach campaign ‘Makkalodu Maiyam’ in Coimbatore South assembly constituency.
MNM is planning to meet people in all 234 assembly constituencies of Tamil Nadu, in which party leaders and cadres will meet people at ward and panchayat level on the difficulties faced by them. This includes issues ignored by public representatives in their respective constituencies. According to a senior party leader, the MNM will prepare its election manifesto based on the feedback received from the people on the ground.
The party leadership said that each ward secretary has been given a list of 25 binary questions on basic amenities in their area in a Google form and the feedback will be used to get a clearer picture on each constituency.
MNM sources told IANS that the party’s Coimbatore district office-bearers have already appealed to the Tamil superstar to contest from the Coimbatore seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Notably, Kamal Haasan had recently gifted a car to Sharmila, a bus driver from Tamil Nadu, who was sacked after a controversy over boarding a bus driven by DMK leader Kanimozhi. Sharmila got into an argument with the bus conductor, who asked Kanimozhi for the ticket fare. Because of this, the owner of the bus fired Sharmila from her job. Kamal Haasan invited him to his house in Chennai and presented him with a new car, which he could drive for a living.
Kamal’s move to gift a car to Coimbatore-based Sharmila is also being seen as a move by the Tamil superstar to gain popularity in the region.
