Chandigarh: Former Asian boxing champion Kaur Singh passed away on Thursday at a hospital in Haryana’s Kurukshetra. He was 74 and was undergoing treatment for several health problems. After retirement from the Indian Army, he was living in his native village Khanal Khurd in Sangrur district of Punjab. For those who don’t know about Kaur Singh, let us tell you that he fought the legend Muhammad Ali in an exhibition match. Kaur Singh won 6 gold medals in international competitions, which included the 1982 Asian Games gold medal. One of his most memorable matches was a four-round exhibition match with boxing legend Muhammad Ali, fought on 27 January 1980 in Delhi. Singh won the gold medal in the heavyweight category at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
This month, the Punjab government announced plans to publish biographies of four great sportspersons in the school curriculum, of which Kaur Singh was one. The three other players are hockey Olympian Balbir Singh Sr., legendary athlete Milkha Singh and India’s first Arjuna Awardee and Olympian athlete Gurbachan Singh Randhawa. They have been included in the physical education books of class IX and X.

I have instructed the concerned authorities to bring his mortal remains to his native village. We will provide all possible help to his family. For her achievements, Kaur Singh was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1982, the Padma Shri in 1983 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 1988.
