Kozhikode (Kerala) : The director and producer of superhit Kannada film ‘Kantara’ appeared before the investigating officers here and recorded their statement in connection with allegations of copyright infringement in a song. Producer Vijay Kiragandur and actor-director Rishab Shetty appeared before the Kozhikode city police on Sunday as directed by the High Court.
A senior district police officer said, “On the direction of the court, they appeared before the investigating officer. His statements were recorded. They will be called again if the need arises. The Supreme Court on February 10 stayed the condition of the Kerala High Court directing the producer and director of the film ‘Kantara’ not to release the film with the song ‘Varaaroopam’ till the final order in the copyright infringement case.
The bench had modified one of the High Court’s conditions and directed that producer Vijay Kiragandur and director Rishab Shetty be released on bail immediately in case they are arrested. The High Court had on February 8 granted anticipatory bail to the director and producer in a case registered at the Kozhikode police station alleging plagiarism in the song. The allegation against him was that ‘Varaharoopam’ was an unauthorized copy of the song ‘Navarasam’, shown on the Malayalam music channel Kappa TV. The high court imposed five conditions and asked Kirgandur and Shetty to appear before the investigating officer on February 12 and 13 between 10 am and 1 pm for questioning.
