Ayerur village situated on the banks of the Pamba River in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The USP of the village has always been the traditional dance-drama of Kathakali.
It took a long time of 12 years for the residents of the village to persuade the authorities to change the name of the village. The erstwhile village of Ayerur has a new name – Ayerur Kathakali Gramam. The name justifies the long history of the village and the tradition of keeping alive the art of Kathakali.

Hence, Aayirur is considered one of the important centers of Kathakali in Kerala.
Iyer’s association with Kathakali dates back almost 200 years. The legacy of Kathakali is centuries old and till date nothing has changed in the art form. Kerala’s famous Kathakali village Aiyarur has been renamed as Aiyarur Kathakali Gramam.
Due to the efforts of Shankar Panikkar of the Chirakuzhiyil family, Kathakali was made more common to the masses. In the olden days, it was a special performance performed only inside the temples. In earlier days, not everyone was allowed inside the temple, hence, the Kalarupa could not reach the mass. Today, Aayirur village has produced a long line of Kathakali artistes and they continue to inspire the younger generation.
