New Delhi: According to a new study, kidney problems are increasing in India due to the use of skin lightening creams. There is a different kind of obsession in society regarding fair skin. Fairness creams have a lucrative market in the country. However, these creams cause massive damage to the kidneys. A study published in the medical journal Kidney International has revealed that the cases of membranous nephropathy (MN) are increasing with the increased use of Fairness cream. This is a condition that damages the kidney filters and causes protein leakage.
MN is an autoimmune disease resulting in nephrotic syndrome. A kidney disorder that causes the body to excrete too much protein in the urine. One of the researchers, Dr. Sajeesh Sivadas of Aster MIMS Hospital in Kerala, wrote in a post on . Widely available in unregulated markets in India, these creams promise instant results but at the cost, users report that stopping use leaves the skin darker than before.
The study examined 22 cases of MN reported between July 2021 and September 2023. Symptoms like fatigue, mild swelling and increased foam in urine were often found in these patients at Aster MIMS Hospital. Only three patients had severe inflammation, but all had elevated levels of protein in their urine. One patient developed cerebral vein thrombosis. A blood clot in the brain occurred, but kidney function was preserved in all. The findings showed that about 68 percent, or 15 out of 22, were positive for neural epidermal growth factor-like 1 protein (NEL-1). Of the 15 patients, 13 admitted to using skin-lightening creams before symptoms began. Of the remainder, one had a history of use of traditional indigenous medicines while the other had no identifiable trigger.
