The Battle of Saraighat was fought in the year 1671 on the banks of the Brahmaputra River between the Mughal army led by Ram Singh and the Ahom army led by Lachit Borphukan. Chao Lachit was the Borphukan (Army General) of the Ahom Army. Ram Singh, the elder son of Amer ruler Mirza Raja Jai Singh, was appointed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb to attack the Ahom kingdom. The Mughal army was larger and more powerful than the Ahom army, but Lachit, with his powerful use of terrain, leadership skills and guerrilla warfare, saved Saraighat in present-day Guwahati from Mughal invasion. He died a natural death in April 1672 at Jorhat, and his remains lie at Lachit Maidan near Jorhat.
Lachit Borphukan Biography
Lachit Borphukan was born on November 24, 1622. Lachit was born in a Tai Ahom family in Charaideo district of Assam. He was the son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua. He was the first Borbarua of Upper Assam as well as the chief commander of the Ahom army under Raja Pratap Singh.
During his prime years, he was a commander and Borphukan (Phu-kon-lung) of the Ahom kingdom. Unfortunately, a year after the Battle of Saraighat ended, Lachit Borphukan died of an unknown illness on April 25, 1672, at the age of 49.

The Battle of Saraighat was fought in 1671 between the Mughal Empire led by Kachhwaka Raja and Raja Ram Singh I and the Ahom Empire led by Lachit Borphukan. The naval battle was fought on the Brahmaputra River at Saraighat located in present-day Guwahati. Assam.

The Mughal army failed to make any progress or advance against the Ahom army and in order to win, tried to induce the Ahom king to dismiss Lachit as commander. The conspiracy against Lachit Borphukan failed due to the intervention of the king’s prime minister, Atan Buragohain.
