Raju Das from Jharkhand is a familiar name in the stunt world of the glamor industry. Master Raju Das, who has been the action director of many TV shows and films, has also been the mentor of Tiger Shroff. Even now he is the martial arts trainer of many actors. Master Raju Das, who has been struggling in Mumbai for the last 27 years, says that Mumbai adopted me very late, but adopted me very well. Jharkhand’s poverty has not left behind even in Kolkata?

Khidisargaon is a place a little far from Girdih in Jharkhand, where I was born. I stayed there for five to six years. After that my family shifted to Kolkata. We used to do farming in the village. Papa went to Kolkata for a better life. He started doing the work of a mason in Kolkata, but even there our condition did not change. We were two brothers and four sisters. When you grow up, you have to take responsibility even if you don’t want to. I started working in a tea stall for Rs 150 a month and then started working with my father. That work was very difficult. I wanted to become a martial artist.

At the age of 13 I decided to go to Mumbai

I was very interested in martial arts since childhood, but my family members did not support me. Papa used to say that all that is not to be learned. Focus on work. I decided to come to Mumbai and do something. I knew that something big had to be done, only then the house and my circumstances would change. I wanted to do something in martial arts. Came from Kolkata to Mumbai with a friend, but he dropped me at Dadar station itself. This is around 1996. Had left Kolkata with only 500 rupees. It was a two-day journey, so some friends were made in the train. Those people used to work in the hotel. With him I went to Saat Bungalow in Mumbai. There used to be a 10 by 10 room in the chawl named as staff room. There were fifteen people living in it. When those people came after 12 midnight after the hotel was closed, everyone took their own places. There was no place for me, I came out and sat down. Couldn’t go anywhere. Out of 500 only 300 were left. Spent the night sitting. In the morning, with the help of his boys, he found work in a juice shop. When the juice shop was closed at night, he used to sleep on the same mat and used to work there in the morning.

martial arts training started again

After getting the job, he started his martial arts training. Here I found a teacher Arvind D’Silva who taught me karate. I used to get 900 rupees in the juice shop, from which I used to pay karate fees and manage my expenses. While learning karate, I made a contact. I went to Nagaland to learn martial arts. I studied there for two years. During this time there also I sold noodles and did some other work and took care of all these expenses. Came back to Mumbai after two years. There is a music company, Venus was working in a canteen there..Kamal Sahni Karke is a director. I taught martial arts to his son, due to which he got some recognition in the industry. During this, again I went to Gujarat for further training, then to Lucknow and then to Kanpur. My learning continued. During this, I came to know that there is a teacher in Goregaon, who is very knowledgeable, but does not have time. I told them that I will learn in the morning. He agreed. Venus’s office is in Oshiwara while he lived in Goregaon. Every day he used to go to his house and pick him up at four in the morning. He used to be ready again in an hour. After getting them breakfast, I used to take them to Juhu. He used to make me practice in Juhu. After that I used to drop them at home by auto. The good thing was that they did not take money. Then I used to go to the canteen and take care of it. Due to which I could sleep only for two to three hours.

Many big action directors have eaten my rightful name and money

It’s been ten years since doing all this, I didn’t even realize it. When I started earning a little better, I started sending a little home as well, because along with handling the canteen, I started teaching martial arts to the children and had also made contacts in films. In the beginning, I did many works as a stuntman under many big stunt directors. I didn’t even read much. There was no understanding of all these things, just have to work and learn. This is what he knew. During this, many big action masters also used me a lot. They used to give me 150 rupees a day while they used to get 1000 rupees from the production house for a fighter. They used to eat all the money of our rights. Hey, some were such that if they ate a little too much food from the canteen of the set, then they would have a problem as to what food they had come here to eat, while they did not have to pay even a single rupee from their pocket.

I’ve worked with great action masters,

You will give full effort, but his name used to be there. I remember it was 18 years ago. Had to do an action scene. I had to jump into a hut with a torch. My hand caught fire while jumping, but till the director said cut. I didn’t move, as the director said cut, I tore the clothes and threw them myself. No one came forward to help me. My hand was burnt, but leave the action director to call the doctor. Didn’t even see my wound. I decided that if I have to do it now, I have to do it myself.

Then did action course from New York Film Academy

There is a lot of difference between teaching martial arts and directing an action scene on screen. I understood this thing very slowly. One of my students was Vishal Thakur Karke. He was also learning acting from the New York Film Academy. I asked him what is the course of action. It is known that yes, I said that I have to do it. Deduct from the fees you are paying me. After which I started online classes. From there I came to know what is block for screen action. What is the trick. They tell everything, then you have to make a video and upload it on their side.. they learned. After that I got a chance to join Ramanand Sagar Films as an action director. There I did action scenes for shows like Prithviraj Chauhan, Dharamveer, Mahavir Hanuman. That’s why Rajat Tox and Vikrant Messi became my students. Worked there for four and a half years. I have also worked for CID. Abhishek had knowledge of martial arts in CID.

Now focus movies and web series

Now I have left the serial. Right now my focus is on film, ad film and web series. Right now I am doing two web series. A superhero one. I am also doing a film for a production house of Rakhi Sawant. I am also doing a film with Johnny Liver’s daughter. Apart from films and web series, I have more than 1500 students in Mumbai. I give fighting training at Anupam Kher Acting Academy, Creative Character Acting School and Whistling Woods.

Tiger Shroff training on banana peel

Tiger Shroff has been one of my best students. He started training in 2004. This training went on for three years. I used to go to actor Ranjitji’s bungalow for training of three people. One was Tiger, the other was Danny’s son Renji and Ranjit’s son Jeeva. Call Tiger anyway. He used to come. Got him done in Lokhand Wala Garden as well. I have trained him till Heropanti. That boy was very hardworking. He threw himself completely into it. He also used to do martial arts, gymming, acrobatics. I started training Tiger first. District came after me. Now Nadeem lives with her. I had also received this offer, but I did not want to be tied to one. I want to make ten more Tiger Shroff. The Tiger that you are seeing now is very flexible. The leg can rise anywhere. He was not like this before. When I used to make him stretch in the beginning, he used to cry out in pain because he could not do it. Thai split was only half of that, so one day I ordered a banana. Ate a banana and made him practice sliding on its peel and he did it.

TV and film actors are my students

Rakhi Sawant, Sambhavna Seth, Payal Rohatgi, Sangram Singh, Deepika Kakkar, Shoaib Ibrahim in the TV serial, Shoaib who was earlier had a slightly heavy body. I made it myself. Ashi, Kelly Dorjee, Taha Shah train with me. Taha is a very good student, it is just too late for him to get a chance. Ravi Kishan, Sambhavna Seth, Shubhi Sharma, Pravesh Lal Yadav, Poonam Dubey, Anara Gupta are my students in Bhojpuri industry. For the launching of the sons of many actors, I have to prepare them. Because the son of Saas Bhi Bahu Thi fame Ketki Dave is about to be launched, so his training has just started. Son of Bhojpuri actor Viraj Bhatt, grandson of Manoj Kumar, Vansh Goswami is also going to be launched. I am also getting Kiran Kumar’s son trained.

Mumbai adopted too late

Came to Mumbai at the age of 13, today I am 40 years old. Of late, Mumbai adopted it. Have spent many days hungry. I have slept on the side of the roads. Today I have my own house in Mira Road, but I live on rent in Lokhandwala because this is my work circle. I came to this city with 500 rupees and today I pay only rent of my room for 50 thousand months. By the way, I plan to have my house here too very soon. I give training in different forms of martial arts. I myself first learned Karate, then did Kung Fu and then did Oshu. Kung Fu is the new version of Usshu. Still I keep learning. I keep doing workshops. I have never stopped my training, if I don’t learn myself then what will I teach to others. Cacoeira is the art form of Brazil. It is martial art in dance form. I used to give training to anyone who wanted it. 25 thousand for normal training but those who want to become heroes. They have to be given special training. For that I charge 60 to 75 thousand per month. Six to seven lakh fees for action direction in films and web series.

Now in Jharkhand my broken hut is not a bungalow

My father died 9 years ago. My mother lives in Jharkhand only. Earlier we did not have a house there, there was land but no house. What was there was a mud hut. That too in a dilapidated condition. Today I have made a bungalow there. I keep coming there to meet my mother and family. My younger brother also lives there with my mother. I try to go there during the festival.
