Significantly, between 2016 and 2020, the maternal mortality rate decreased by 35 percent in Australia and New Zealand. Whereas in Central and South Asia, it declined by 16 percent. In Europe and North America, the maternal mortality rate increased by 17 percent. Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean also saw a jump of 15 per cent. Of the total maternal mortality figures, 70 percent occurred in sub-Saharan African countries. Maternal mortality rates are twice the average rate in Afghanistan, Central Africa, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
