Merry Christmas Review | Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif’s suspense thriller will thrill after the interval

Merry Christmas Movie Review: After days of promotions from city to city, Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif-starrer suspense thriller Merry Christmas has finally released in theatres. The story of the film presents every character with such purity that it will keep you engaged till the end. However, I felt the film was a bit slow in the first half as the story was building up. If you love watching suspense thrillers and want to watch Merry Christmas in theaters this weekend, then you must read this review till the end to get a brief idea about the movie.

The film starts just like its trailer where the screen is divided into two parts and two people are using a mixer grinder. The film then begins with Vijay Sethupathi returning to his home after 7 years where he meets his neighbor, played by Tinu Anand. It was Christmas eve and Vijay decided to go out to celebrate the festival and reached a restaurant where he saw Katrina sitting alone with her daughter. He falls in love with her and follows her wherever she goes. After some time, the two strangers converse with each other and eventually celebrate Christmas Eve at her house. They dance, drink wine and share their past with each other. Things were perfect between them until Katrina’s house became part of a crime scene. But one incident turned the whole story upside down… to know that you will have to go to the cinema hall.

When it comes to acting, both the lead stars Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi have justified their characters. However, in the first half of the movie, you will find it difficult to understand his Hindi accent clearly and are likely to miss a few words. But this will not last long and one will get used to their accent and will find them perfect in their characters. Vijay is shown to be an introvert in the film and he plays the character well. Katrina, on the other hand, also charms with her bubbly cute character who is a mother with a chaotic personal life. Apart from the lead actors, the supporting cast including Tinu Anand, Sanjay Kapoor and Vinay Pathak have played cameo roles in the film.

Merry Christmas is directed by Sriram Raghavan, who tried his best to portray a perfect crime story that takes place on Christmas Eve, but there are several stretches in the film where you might feel that it is too drawn out. Not only this, Sriram’s direction in the first half seemed a bit amateurish and one might get bored in the first 20-30 minutes.

Review

As mentioned above, Merry Christmas is slow in the first half and the story takes time to catch up with the audience’s attention. Things get going just 2 minutes before the interval and the second half is well underway. If you’re a fan of murder mysteries, you may enjoy the slow build up in the first part. However, when it comes to overall entertainment, it will definitely take a little longer.

However, after the show ends one will be satisfied with the climax full of twists and turns. Talking about the rating of the movie and considering each and every factor, I will give Merry Christmas 3 out of five stars.
