Microplastic found in blood clots of 80 percent patients after heart attack

New Delhi. A team of scientists in China has detected microplastics in 80 percent of blood clots after stroke, heart attack and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), raising fears that they may contribute to these deadly diseases.
Microplastics are any kind of plastic less than five mm in length. These are a significant environmental and health concern worldwide.
The new study, published in the journal E Bio Medicine, showed that samples of blood clots were found in the cerebral arteries in the brain, coronary arteries in the heart and deep veins in the lower limbs of 30 patients.
Tatiana Provel, associate professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University in the US, wrote on X that microplastics were found in 80 percent of clots removed from blood vessels after a heart attack, stroke or deep vein thrombosis. This is really bad news. Plastics are everywhere in modern life.
The study emphasizes the need to accurately investigate the impact of microplastics on human health. This showed that the presence of microplastics could increase the severity of heart attack, stroke or DVT.
“Our findings revealed blood clots of different concentrations, polymer types and physical properties,” said Shroom, of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical, China.
Identifying the sources of exposure and taking into account the trends reported in the study requires future research on a larger scale, he said.
