More cases of cesarean in private hospitals in Delhi, MCD maternity homes with normal delivery remain empty – Dainik Savera Times

New Delhi: About 2.82 lakh children were born in the government and private hospitals of the national capital in the year 2022, out of which about 38 percent i.e. 1.07 lakh children were born by cesarean method while 17 maternity hospitals of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were born based on the method of normal delivery. Only 31,121 deliveries took place in the homes in the last four and a half years. According to the Annual Report 2022 of Birth and Death Registration in the Capital by the Economic and Statistics Department of the Government of Delhi, a total of 2,82,389 children were born in Delhi in 2022, out of which 1,81,892 children were born through normal delivery and 1,07,079 children were born by birth. Was born through cesarean operation.

According to the Annual Report of Birth and Death Registration 2022, a total of 1,65,826 children were born in government hospitals located in urban areas of Delhi, out of which 44,040 children were born by cesarean. A total of 87,629 children were born in private hospitals, out of which 53,446 children were born through caesarean section while 32,756 children were born through normal delivery. According to the data, a total of 21,079 children were born in government hospitals located in rural areas of Delhi, out of which 4,893 children were born by cesarean. A total of 7,855 children were born in private hospitals located in rural areas, out of which 4,700 children were born through caesarean section while 3,089 children were born through normal delivery.

At the same time, according to the information provided by the Health Department of MCD in response to the application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, in 17 maternity homes of MCD from the first quarter of 2019-20 (April to June) to 2023-24. A total of 31,121 women gave birth to children in the second quarter (July to September) and during this period, 3 newborns died during delivery. The Health Department said in response to RTI that in the last two years, no woman died during delivery in the maternity homes under the Municipal Corporation.

Rapid increase in the number of cesareans
Dr. Meenakshi Bansal, gynecologist at Shri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi, said that at present the number of cesareans has increased faster than normal deliveries. Regarding the reasons for cesarean, Dr. Meenakshi told that the position of the child in the stomach is not correct or the child is changing its position repeatedly, the umbilical cord is entangled in the child’s neck, the child is not developing properly. Be it, the baby’s heartbeat has become abnormal or there is a lack of oxygen, the baby’s head is bigger than the ‘birth canal’, the pregnant woman has BP or heart disease problem, the pregnant woman has already had a cesarean or any major surgery. In many circumstances where an operation has taken place, delivery is done by operation. He said that many women are themselves choosing the option of ‘C-section’ or cesarean delivery to avoid the pain during normal delivery, while on the other hand, some women want to give birth to the child as per the Muhurta. She is choosing cesarean delivery.
